Le Moyne Professors Awarded $20,000 Research Grant

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) … Three professors at Le Moyne College - Monica Sylvia, psychology, Sunita Singh, education, and Frank Ridzi, sociology - have been awarded a $20,000 research grant from the Sociological Initiatives Foundation.

The funding will expand their research on the impact of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library (DPIL) program to refugee families in the Syracuse area. Founded in 1996, DPIL is a nonprofit organization that gives hundreds of thousands of books each month to registered children in participating communities all over the United States and Canada. As they promote the love of early reading and learning as the building blocks for a strong foundation in education, program officials strive to help children dream more, learn more, care more and be more through its educational campaign. There are currently more than 1,000 chapters of Imagination Library in the United States.

Previous research was conducted by the trio on more than 700 families enrolled in Onondaga County’s chapter of DPIL and showed significant positive results for the program, including the fact that it has a positive effect on family reading regardless of child age, gender, family income, parental education, race, parental nation of birth and primary language. Their research is being conducted in collaboration with the Literacy Coalition and Central New York Community Foundation.

Sociological Initiatives Foundation awards only seven grants nationally. This grant was the maximum amount awarded to any single applicant.
