Le Moyne College Hosts 19th Bloomsday Celebration

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) … Le Moyne College will host the area’s 19th annual Bloomsday celebration on Saturday, June 16, beginning at noon. Bloomsday is held around the world each year on June 16, the date on which all the events in the novel “Ulysses” by James Joyce take place. The celebration, sponsored by the Syracuse James Joyce Club (SJJC) and the Irish studies program at Le Moyne, will be held in Grewen Auditorium and is free and open to the public.

From noon to 2 pm, special celebrity guests will read their favorite passages from James Joyce's writing, including “The Dead,” “Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man,” and “Finnegan's Wake.” Special guests include U.S. Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle, representative of New York’s 25th Congressional district; Dick Case, columnist for the Syracuse Post-Standard; Karen DeCrow, former president of NOW, a member of the National Women's Hall of Fame and a lawyer; David Hoyne, proprietor of Kitty Hoynes Restaurant and a native of Ireland; Joe O'Hara, president of the PEACE Council; Cammi Clark, editor of Today's CNY Woman; and Vi Baluyat, from Washington, D.C., a long-time friend of Richard Long, the founder of the SJJC. This year’s Bloomsday honors Long, who was a member of the first graduating class at Le Moyne and worked as a reporter for the Syracuse Herald-Journal, Skaneateles Press and other publications.

From 2 - 10 p.m., members of the SJJC will read excerpts from “Ulysses.” The event will also feature the awarding of scholarships to winners of the SJJC writing contest.

Food and beverages will be available throughout the day. Music will be provided at the dinner hour break by Freres Jumeaux, brothers Eric and Anthony McGriff. For more information, contact Marian Stanton, president of the SJJC, at (315) 593-9697.
