Le Moyne Upward Bound Gets $1.9 Million Grant from Education Department
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For immediate release...) Le Moyne’s Upward Bound program has received a $1.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education for five years, effective September 2012.
The program will serve 84 students in 9th through 12th grade each year of the grant in the City of Syracuse. The program is designed to generate the skills and motivation necessary for students to successfully graduate from high school and complete a post-secondary education program. It provides diverse activities and a comprehensive college preparatory curriculum during a Saturday Scholastic Academy and a six-week Summer Residential Program that addresses the educational, social, emotional, cultural and recreational needs of participants.
The program at Le Moyne has been highly successful. Virtually 100 percent of participants have earned high school diplomas. This contrasts with a state graduation rate of 74 percent and a graduation rate in the City of Syracuse of only 48.4 percent, according to a recent article in the Syracuse Post-Standard.
The College’s Upward Bound program was one of the first 18 such pilot programs funded in the nation in 1965.
