Le Moyne College Hosts 20th Bloomsday Celebration June 15

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) … Le Moyne College will host the area’s 20th annual Bloomsday celebration (and fifth consecutive year at Le Moyne) on Saturday, June 15, beginning at noon. Bloomsday is held around the world each year on June 16, the date on which all the events in the novel “Ulysses” by James Joyce take place. (It’s being held on June 15 this year to avoid conflicting with Father’s Day.

The celebration, sponsored by the Syracuse James Joyce Club (SJJC) and the Irish studies program at Le Moyne, will be held in Grewen Auditorium and is free and open to the public.

From noon to 2 p.m., special celebrity guests will read their favorite passages from James Joyce's writing, including “The Dead,” “Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man,” and “Finnegan's Wake.” Special guests include Tim Fox, executive producer of Channel 9’s “Bridge Street” and veteran reporter and producer; Farah Fátima Jadran, managing editor of Syracuse Woman Magazine; Patrick Lawler, who teaches at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, and is Writer in Residence at Le Moyne College; Kate D. Mahoney, a devotee of all things Joyce who is known to many for her miraculous recovery from multiple organ failure through the intercession of Saint Marianne Cope; David A. A. Ridings, former executive of Porter Cable Power Tools and Pass & Seymour who has served as a council member of the New York State Council on the Arts; former Post-Standard writer Hart Seely, winner of numerous state and national awards for investigative reporting; and Cathy Wolff, the former general and artistic director of Syracuse Opera.

From 2 to 10 p.m., members of the SJJC will read excerpts from “Ulysses.” The event will also feature the awarding of scholarships to winners of the SJJC writing contest.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase throughout the day. For more information, contact Marian Stanton, president of the SJJC, at (315) 593-9697.
