Le Moyne College Names Dr. Fred P. Pestello as Its 13th President

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) … Following a nine-month national search, Le Moyne College has named Dr. Fred P. Pestello as its 13th president. He becomes the first non-Jesuit permanent president in Le Moyne’s 62-year history.

He will assume the presidency on July 1, taking over from Dr. John Smarrelli Jr. ’75, who has served as Le Moyne’s interim president since May 21, 2007.

“Attracting someone with Dr. Pestello’s impressive credentials and background is a testament to the reputation of Le Moyne College,” said Mary Cotter, chair of Le Moyne’s Board of Trustees.
“Under his leadership, I am confident Le Moyne will continue its legacy of learning and service, while always maintaining the core Jesuit ideals upon which it was founded.”

“I was immediately and powerfully drawn to Le Moyne College’s mission and aspirations. Once I met the wonderful people of Le Moyne, the faculty, staff, students, trustees, regents, alumni, and friends, I had no doubt that Le Moyne is poised to achieve its vision of attaining national recognition as a premier Jesuit college,” said Dr. Pestello. “It will do so through its unyielding commitment to provide a superior education based on a rigorous intellectual life in dialogue with faith. Those who come to Le Moyne and embrace this approach to education will be exquisitely prepared for the many opportunities and challenges they will face over the course of their personal and professional lives. I am honored to be welcomed into this precious Jesuit learning community and humbled by the opportunity to serve as its president.”

Dr. Pestello, 55, comes to Le Moyne following a 24-year career at the University of Dayton (UD) in Dayton, Ohio. He began his time there as a sociology professor, and served from 1993 to 1997 as chair of UD's department of sociology, anthropology, and social work. From 1997 to 2000 he was associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences. Since 2001, he has served as provost and senior vice president for educational affairs at the university. UD has approximately 6,500 full-time undergraduates and an enrollment of more than 10,000 students, making it the largest private university in Ohio.

As UD’s provost and senior vice president for educational affairs, Dr. Pestello serves as the university’s chief academic officer to preserve, develop, and promote its academic mission. Among his noteworthy accomplishments were his role in transitioning UD, a Catholic institution, to its first lay president, coordinating its response to Ex corde Ecclesiae, (the 1990 Vatican document on Catholic higher education), and crafting a new vision statement and strategic plan for the university.

Dr. Pestello holds three degrees in sociology – a Ph.D. from the University of Akron-Kent State, a master’s degree from the University of Akron and a bachelor’s degree from John Carroll University. His family includes wife Fran, chair of the department of sociology, anthropology and social work at UD; daughter, Vitina, a junior double majoring in international studies and economics at UD; and son, Ferdinando, a senior at Centerville High School.

“I want to thank the search committee, chaired by Monsignor Robert Yeazel, and my fellow members of the Board of Trustees for their role in this selection,” said Ms. Cotter. “I’d also like to thank the Le Moyne College community, as well as the many alumni, who took the time to meet and share their insights during the search process.”

She also expressed her appreciation to Dr. Smarrelli for his service as interim president. “The Board is grateful for John’s role in moving Le Moyne forward over the past 10 months,” she said.

Founded in 1946, Le Moyne College offers a program of liberal arts, sciences, pre-professional studies, and graduate programs in education, business administration, physician assistant studies, and nursing. Recognized 16 consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report for its quality and value, Le Moyne is one of 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States, and the first to open as a co-educational institution.

NOTE: A PRESS CONFERENCE TO FORMALLY INTRODUCE DR. PESTELLO
WILL BE HELD AT 1 P.M. ON TUESDAY, APRIL 1, IN THE PANASCI FAMILY CHAPEL.
