Journalist to Present Peacemaker Lecture at Le Moyne College

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) … Journalist and author Jeremy Scahill will present The Rev. Daniel Berrigan, S.J. Peacemaker Lecture at Le Moyne College on Tuesday, April 1, at 7 p.m. in the Panasci Family Chapel. His talk is titled “Blackwater: The Rise of the World’s Most Powerful Mercenary Army.”

In his talk, Scahill will discuss a career that has taken him from Iraq, where he was one of the few Western reporters to gain access to the Abu Graib prison under Saddam Hussein’s regime, to New Orleans, where his reporting on the presence of Blackwater Worldwide officials there following Hurricane Katrina sparked a Congressional inquiry.

A Brooklyn resident, Scahill is a writing fellow at The Nation Institute and a frequent contributor to The Nation magazine. He has won numerous awards, including the prestigious George Polk Award and a Golden Reel Award for Best National Radio News Story of 2002.

The annual lecture was established in 2000 to honor Berrigan, who taught at Le Moyne College and was one of the great Catholic social activists of the 20th century.

The event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Office of the Provost.
