Education Program at Le Moyne College Receives TEAC Accreditation

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) … Following a four-year comprehensive process, Le Moyne College’s education department has received formal notification that it has earned full accreditation from the Teachers Education Accreditation Council (TEAC). The accreditation runs from December 2007 to December 2012.

“Accreditation by TEAC is a tremendous affirmation of the quality of Le Moyne’s undergraduate and graduate education program,” said Dr. Cathy Leogrande, chair of the College’s education department. “It represents a lot of hard work by many individuals within the department and the College.”
The accreditation process began with a self-study by the program and development of an inquiry brief describing the program’s claims of quality and collection of valid evidence to support them. An audit team of education professionals then conducted an on-site review of the program. Next, an accreditation panel, consisting of seven individuals from varying educational backgrounds, reviewed all materials for evidence and arguments that the program meets TEAC’s quality principles and standards, and that graduates are competent, caring and qualified. Finally, the accreditation committee, comprised of TEAC board members, made the final decision, looking at the panel’s evaluation and the process that led up to it.
“This is a significant milestone in the history of our education curriculum,” said Dr. Linda LeMura, Le Moyne’s acting provost and vice president for academic affairs. “It also represents a challenge to maintain our high standards and do an even better job in the future preparing the teachers of tomorrow.”

Le Moyne’s undergraduate program has four options, each leading to a different initial state teacher certification. The graduate program also has four programs leading to master’s degrees, each addressing the needs of different student populations.

Founded in 1997, TEAC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving academic degree programs for professional educators, those who will teach and lead in schools, pre-K through grade 12. TEAC is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and by the U.S. Department of Education.
