SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) … Members of the Le Moyne College choral and orchestral community, along with members of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, will perform highlights of Mendelssohn’s “St. Paul” Oratorio on Sunday, March 1, at 3 p.m. at Our Lady of Pompei/St. Peter’s Church, Ash Street, Syracuse. Andrew Russo, artist-in-residence at Le Moyne College, will conduct. There will be a pre-concert lecture beginning at 2:30 p.m. with Andrew Russo and J. Mark Lawson.
The libretto (begun in 1832) was put together by the composer and childhood friend, Pastor Julius Schubring, from both Old and New Testament passages. Composition of the music began in 1834 and “St. Paul” premiered on May 22, 1836, at the Lower Rhine Music Festival in Dusseldorf. The English premiere was in October of the same year in Liverpool.
Admission is free, but a freewill offering will be accepted. The event is sponsored by the Sanzone Center for Catholic Studies and Theological Reflection at Le Moyne. For more information, call (315) 445-4573.
