Jumpstart Syracuse Program at Le Moyne College Hosting 3rd Annual Learning Fair

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) … The Jumpstart Syracuse program at Le Moyne College will be hosting its third annual Learning Fair on Tuesday, April 7, from 9 – 11 a.m.  Preschool children, their teachers, and their families will be attending the campus of Le Moyne College to experience “Jumpstart for a day.” Children and teachers/family members will rotate through approximately 20 learning based activities called learning stations. The activities at each station are designed to help develop the social and language skills necessary for success in school, and are based on the Jumpstart philosophy and curriculum used in the classroom by corps members during the program year. Each learning station will be staffed by at least two Le Moyne students (made up of a combination of Jumpstart Corps members and Le Moyne student volunteers) to assist the children through the activity.

We are currently anticipating over 150 preschool children participating in the fair. The participating children will come from our Jumpstart Syracuse program partner centers: Merrick Head Start, Northside CYO, Rockwell Head Start, and Sumner Head Start. We are also planning to have two very special guests: the Le Moyne Dolphin mascot, and the book character, Winnie the Pooh.

Jumpstart is a national non-profit organization working toward the day every child in America enters school prepared to succeed. Since March 2000, Jumpstart Syracuse at Le Moyne College has been bringing preschool children and caring college students together in year-long one-to-one mentoring relationships to build vital literacy, social and emotional skills children need to thrive. To date, over 280 volunteers have participated in the program including Le Moyne College students and community volunteers, serving more than 90,000 community service hours.
