Le Moyne College Hosts Talk on Rethinking Human Rights

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) … Le Moyne College will host a talk by Ken Baynes on Thursday, Oct. 29, at 5 p.m. in the Reilley Room, located in Reilly Hall. His talk is titled “Rethinking Human Rights: Toward a Political Conception.” In his talk Baynes, a professor of philosophy at Syracuse University, will address whether the tradition of natural law is a solid basis for human rights.

Baynes works primarily in social and political philosophy, with a special focus in critical theory and modern and contemporary German philosophy. He is the author of “The Normative Grounds of Social Criticism: Kant, Rawls and Habermas.”

His current interests include attempts to ground moral principles in practical reason and the relationship between democracy and basic rights, including “multicultural rights.” Baynes holds a doctorate from Boston University.

This event is part of the Philosophy Speakers Series and is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the department of philosophy at Le Moyne. For more information, call (315) 445-4491.
