Sanzone Center Hosts Talk on History of Catholic Church in China

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) … The Sanzone Center for Catholic Studies and Theological Reflection at Le Moyne College will host a talk by Jeremy Clarke, S.J., on Thursday, Nov. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in Grewen Auditorium. His talk is titled “Beyond Ricci: A Celebration of 400 Years of the Chinese Catholic Church.”

Jeremy Clarke, S.J., is a postdoctoral fellow in history at Boston College and visiting fellow in the Division of Pacific and Asian History at Australian National University. His talk will address the early history of Jesuit missionary activity in China, beginning with the legendary Matteo Ricci, S.J., who helped pioneer the encounter between the Western Church and Chinese culture. He will also talk about Ricci in the context of what his initial work enabled, including the re-establishment of Christianity in China, and the promotion of rich cross-cultural interactions between European Jesuits and their Chinese colleagues. These exchanges took place over several centuries with a number of Chinese scholars, some of whom eventually became Christian, and ultimately included some truly significant Chinese Jesuits, as well. In addition, Clarke will talk about the contemporary Chinese church and show footage from a documentary he is making based on his travels in China last summer.

The event is free and open to the public. It is co-sponsored by the Office of the Provost and Academic Vice President, the Center for Peace & Global Studies, the Le Moyne Jesuit Community, departments of history and religious studies and the film program. For more information, call (315) 445-4365.
