Le Moyne College Holds Vigil on 20th Anniversary of Murder of Jesuit Priests in El Salvador

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) … In a case still not fully investigated, members of the Salvadoran army killed six Jesuits associated with the Universidad Centroamericana José Simeón Cañas (UCA-JSC), their housekeeper, and her fifteen-year old daughter in San Salvador during the middle of the night on November 16, 1989. Following the tragedy, Charles J. Beirne, S.J., who later became president of Le Moyne College, was among the first Jesuits to volunteer to go to El Salvador and take up the work of the martyrs at the university.

A candle vigil and brief ceremony will be held at Le Moyne College on Mon., Nov. 16, from 5 to 6 p.m. at Grewen Hall on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the massacres and to remember all those who have given their lives in the struggle for justice. The event is free and open to the public.

The event is sponsored by the Center for Peace and Global Studies, campus ministry, the Le Moyne College Jesuit community, Office of Mission and Identity, President’s Office and the Sanzone Center for Catholic Studies and Theological Reflection.
