Le Moyne Hosts Talk on "Cavell and Film"

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) … Le Moyne College will host a talk by Phillip Novak on “Cavell and Film” on Thurs., Feb. 18, at 5:30 p.m. in 137 Grewen Hall.

Film is a central preoccupation in the work of philosopher Stanley Cavell. Indeed, he speculates at one point that “the condition of philosophy” might be film’s “natural condition,” and he conceives of his readings of particular films as a form of philosophical investigation. Phillip Novak, associate professor of English, will discuss, in outline, Cavell’s interest in and understanding of film and its relation to philosophy, using summaries of aspects of Cavell’s reading of two films – “It Happened One Night” (Frank Capra, 1934) and “Bringing Up Baby” (Howard Hawks, 1938) – as a means of illustrating that relation.

This event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the department of philosophy and the department of English. The Cavelleria Siracusa series is supported by a generous grant from the J. P. Watson Fund. For more information, call (315) 445-4514.
