Le Moyne Named to 2011 List of Military Friendly Schools

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) … For the first time, Le Moyne College has been named to the 2011 list of Military Friendly Schools, released by G.I. Jobs Magazine. The list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools which are doing the most to embrace America’s veterans as students.

Criteria for making the Military Friendly Schools list includes efforts to recruit and retain military and veteran students, results in recruiting military and veteran students and academic accreditations.

“Since our founding, the impetus of which was in part to serve the GIs returning from World War II, Le Moyne has valued the valiant service these men and women have provided to our nation, as well as the many significant contributions they make to the College’s vibrant learning community,” said Le Moyne President Fred Pestello. “We owe our veterans a tremendous debt of gratitude, and are committed to providing academic, spiritual and social support in the finest Jesuit tradition. These men and women are an integral part of our nation’s future, and we want to be part of their preparation and development.”

In addition to offering benefits to student veterans, including credit for service, this fall Le Moyne will dedicate a house to serve as a gathering place for its student-veteran population. The space is a natural extension of the College’s Success for Veterans Program, which features a one-stop resource center with extensive transition, assimilation and on-going support services on campus, as well as advisement on academics and veterans’ benefits.

“Our hope is that this recognition will generate more interest from veterans in learning about the value of a Le Moyne education,” said Dan Bartlett, assistant director for the College’s Center for Continuing Education. “The feedback from those veterans who have enrolled here has been tremendous, and our hope is that more will be able to experience all the things we have to offer.”
