Le Moyne Veterans House Grand Opening
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) … Le Moyne College will formally dedicate its new Veterans House on Friday, Oct. 15, at 3 p.m. The house, located at 139 Springfield Road, has been refurbished to serve the needs of Le Moyne’s burgeoning student-veteran population. Among those scheduled to provide remarks at the ceremony are Congressman Dan Maffei and Le Moyne President Fred Pestello.
The building – which formerly served as the Ignatian House – is accessible to student-veterans while classes are in session, and is staffed by members of the College’s Center for Continuing Education. Updated with new computers and wireless Internet access, the space includes dedicated study areas, a lounge and staff offices.
Le Moyne’s efforts to welcome veterans to campus harken back to its founding by the Society of Jesus in 1946, shortly after President Franklin Roosevelt signed the original GI Bill of Rights into law. A total of eight veterans graduated from Le Moyne in 2010, and have gone on to work for a number of organizations, including SRCTec, locally. There are currently approximately 50 veterans enrolled at Le Moyne, and that number is expected to grow as more men and women return from serving overseas and learn about the opportunities available to them through the Success for Veterans program at the College.
