Martha Nussbaum Visits Le Moyne College to Talk about the Value of the Humanities

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) … Le Moyne College will host a talk by Martha Nussbaum of the University of Chicago on Thursday, Nov. 18, at 6:30 p.m. in Grewen Auditorium. Her talk is titled “Not for Profit: Why Democracy Needs the Humanities” and is based on her new book of the same title recently published by Princeton University Press.

In her book, Nussbaum argues that historically the humanities have been central to education because they have rightly been seen as essential for creating competent democratic citizens. But we increasingly treat education as though its primary goal were to teach students to be economically productive rather than to think critically, damaging our ability to deal with complex global problems.

Martha Nussbaum is Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics in the Philosophy Department, Law School, and Divinity School at the University of Chicago.

The lecture will be followed by a reception and book signing and is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the philosophy department, gender and women’s studies, the Sanzone Center for Catholic Studies and Theological Reflection, the Dean of Arts and Sciences, and the Office of the Provost.
