NCAA Report: Dolphins Student-Athletes Continue to Excel in the Classroom

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) ... In the latest report issued by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Le Moyne student-athletes continue to perform well above the average of other Division II schools. The report details graduation rates for both student-athletes and the entire student population.

Each year the NCAA issues a report detailing various measures of academic performance for all its member institutions. In the 2010 report, Le Moyne's student-athlete graduation rate was 90%, a figure that takes into consideration student-athletes completing their degree within six years from enrollment. Last year’s success rate for Le Moyne student-athletes was also 90%. For all Le Moyne students, the average graduation rate was 72%, according to the report.

"The academic performance of our student-athletes continues to be exemplary, and reflects Le Moyne commitment to academics first,” said President Fred P. Pestello, Ph.D. “I’m heartened that these Dolphins have maintained this high level of performance in the classroom, while at the same time continuing to achieve remarkable success on the field. This reflects not only our dedication to the Jesuit tenet of the education of the whole person, but also our student-athletes dedication to the Division II philosophy of “life in the balance.”

“Our primary goal is the make the student-athlete experience at the College the best it can be," said Matt Bassett, assistant vice president and director of intercollegiate athletics at Le Moyne. “This report is a strong affirmation of all that we do with our students to ensure their academic success. I’m proud of the many individuals – coaches, professors, advisors, and others – who have helped our students achieve this impressive level of academic success.”

Average Graduation Rate
(average rate for students entering college in 2000, 2001, 2002, & 2003)
All students at Division II schools: 47%
All students at Le Moyne: 72%
All student-athletes at Division II schools: 71%
All student-athletes at Le Moyne: 90%

Since the 2003-04 academic year, Le Moyne student-athletes have had 15 consecutive semesters with an average team cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. During the fall 2010 semester, 301 student-athletes' average semester GPA was 3.12, boosting the cumulative GPA to 3.11. Of the 17 athletic teams at Le Moyne, 12 earned a semester GPA of 3.0 or higher with 59% (177) of all student-athletes reaching the 3.0 mark this fall. The women’s golf team earned the top honor for the semester with a team GPA of 3.42, with men’s tennis next with a 3.38 semester GPA.

The most current rankings are in line with recent academic achievement of Le Moyne students. In 2003, Le Moyne was recognized by USA Today and the NCAA for having the highest graduation rate for scholarship athletes among all of the nation's 270 Division II schools, at 92%. Le Moyne trailed only three college and universities nationwide (regardless of division) in those rankings.

Graduation rate takes transfer students into account and removes students who left the institution in good academic standing. Given the partial-scholarship financial aid model of Division II, graduation rate also includes student-athletes not receiving athletic scholarships.
