Students frequently ask "What can I do with a major in...?" Regardless of the major, the answer is more or less the same: there are a variety of directions a person can head with a four year college degree. This is particularly true of liberal arts graduates.
Each year around 20% of Le Moyne's graduates go directly on to full-time graduate study (others attend part-time or at a later date). Some students continue with advanced study with their undergraduate discipline. Others pursue professional studies. Approximately 75% of Le Moyne's students seek entry level career positions upon graduation. While some work in positions closely tied to their undergraduate major, many enter careers that are not directly related to their undergraduate degree.
In exploring career options it can be helpful to review a list of occupations held by alumni who majored in your area of study. Keep in mind that you are not limited to just those positions. Meet Jamie Garzia, '95
I was hooked on studying economics after completing my freshman year at Le Moyne. Its practical application had indeed captured my attention, so much so, I declared economics as my major during my sophomore year. Having always been the analytical type, majoring in economics offered me the chance to build on my natural abilities. It seemed like a natural fit right from the start, and over time my interest level deepened as my coursework and familiarity with the tools advanced. Coming from an economically depressed area of the state, I was able to relate strongly with what I was learning. My studies were timely, useful, and relevant to my life; and I felt a real connection to the world around me.
Economics provided a framework and structure for understanding relationships between the drivers of behavior and their impacts on individuals and society. It helped see more clearly how the tough choices we make as consumers ripple throughout the economy. In my studies, I was able to integrate my knowledge of other academic disciplines with economics and use this to my advantage when thinking critically and doing analysis. For me, my major was the appropriate blend of math, business, and computer science. I saw how it can lend itself to a number of business disciplines, and I always felt challenged. In addition, I found the faculty to be supportive, accessible and always encouraging of my endeavors adding to my experience.
Since graduating from Le Moyne in 1995, I have earned my Master’s degree in applied economics and have enjoyed a career full of possibility and growth. I have had the privilege to live in Washington, DC and work for the Federal Government and many fine companies. Beginning with my coursework at Le Moyne, I have continued to build my skill set over time and have been able to apply my knowledge in different ways. Over the years, I have explored many different applications of economics, such as: forecasting, financial modeling, marketing research, database design, econometrics, and corporate planning – most of it in the aviation industry. My training and abilities helped me to earn some prominent positions, most notably as a manager of route strategy and planning at a major airline and a vice president at a prestigious consulting firm. I have been given the opportunity to travel all over the world and work with some of the most powerful people in my industry.
My studies have afforded me a lot of flexibility and I have always been able to follow my interests and tailor my career accordingly. My career training has helped me to feel confident and the courage to try new things. Today, I work in product marketing, developing technical solutions for the aviation industry. I am also blessed with a stable career which allows me to spend time doing the things that really matter, like being with family, friends, and giving back through service work.
Meet Jennifer Raynor B.A. Economics, Integral Honors Program, 2005
When I started at Le Moyne in 2001, I explored a number of very different majors – physics, math, business, ecology, and French, just to name a few. There were many subjects I enjoyed learning, but I had no real sense of how my interests would translate into a job. I have always been a “jack of all trades” type of person, so I quickly decided that my chosen major needed to have a broad application to a variety of disciplines. I spent a lot of time feeling uncertain about the best path, until I took a game-changer class in principles of microeconomics. This class had all of the right ingredients: conceptual theory, quantitative analysis, and seemingly limitless application…and a great teacher to guide me through it all. About two weeks into the course, I changed my major to economics and never looked back.
My experiences in the economics program at Le Moyne were extremely rewarding. The program was fairly small at that time, so class size was generally very intimate. This setting was perfect to form close bonds with my fellow economics majors and professors, which was integral to my academic success. The benefits of having a strong network to bounce ideas off of or ask for help truly cannot be over stated.
In 2005, I graduated summa cum laude from the Integral Honors Program, with an economics major and math and urban/regional studies minors. I quickly received a number of job offers, but nothing seemed like the right fit. After getting some advice from one of my past economics professors (remember your network!), I decided to change my focus and began looking for economist jobs with the federal government.
About a year after graduation, I finally accepted a wonderful job in the Division of International Labor Comparisons at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). There, I learned that direct comparisons of statistics across countries can be misleading because of differences in concepts and definitions (it can be like comparing apples to oranges). In a nutshell, my job was to develop ways to make all of the data “apples”. Over time I began taking on more responsibility, and eventually I started leading teams and managing projects. My biggest project was a chartbook of international labor comparisons, which involved collaboration between three agencies and about 20 people.
With three years of experience behind me, I took a brief hiatus from civil service to apply my skills towards my true passion in life, environmental conservation. I spent several months volunteering as an economist with the World Wildlife Fund in Southeast Asia and was lucky enough to have a job waiting for me at the BLS when I returned! Since then I have been working in the division that produces U.S. productivity measures, a principal federal economic indicator.
Recently I have formalized my interest in environmental conservation by pursuing a master’s degree in Applied Economics (environmental economics) at Johns Hopkins University. I really enjoy it, but doing coursework is challenging while working full-time.
My experiences since graduation have confirmed that it was worth the wait to find a job that really fits my interests and preferences. I highly recommend that new graduates carefully consider some of the intangibles related to a job beyond hours, pay, and location, before accepting an offer. For me, office culture, promotion potential, and chemistry with my manager all have had a huge impact on my satisfaction with my job at the end of the day and also on my professional development. My attitude towards work also has greatly influenced the trajectory of my career. From my first day on the job I asked a lot of questions, was willing to do whatever needed to be done (regardless of my job description), and proactively sought opportunities to develop and demonstrate my skills. This has allowed me to take on greater responsibility, achieve promotions faster, and learn so much more than I would have otherwise.
In short, never underestimate the value of a great network, patience, and the power of “yes”!
