Master of Science Program in Nursing
The Master of Science is a 39-credit program with concentrations in nurse educator and nurse administrator roles. This program was established to address the nationwide shortage of professional nurse leaders prepared at the graduate level in these two functional roles to meet the public’s demand for quality nursing care.
The program curriculum is nationally accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and is designed to concur with the standards for master’s education as set forth by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing in its Essentials of Master’s Education for Advanced Nursing Practice. Students who graduate from the education track can serve as faculty members in schools of nursing, as staff development coordinators, as in-service educators, as patient/family educators or as community educators. Those who choose the administrator track will be prepared for managerial and administrative roles in healthcare agencies and institutions.
The Master of Science curriculum consists of three parts: core, specialty focus, and a functional role track of nurse educator or nurse administrator. Core courses of 12 credits satisfy the content areas of ethics, human diversity and social issues, health care delivery, and research. The specialty focus includes a 9-credit concentration in adult health and illness. The centerpiece of the curriculum consists of two functional role tracks of 18 credits each. A track includes courses to prepare students to assume primary leadership roles as either nurse educators or nurse administrators. Both tracks require a capstone scholarly project. The curriculum is designed as a two-year program of study for full-time students and as a three-year program of study for part-time students.

Post-Master’s Certificates
Two post-master’s certificate programs are also offered to accommodate professional nurses who hold a master’s degree in nursing or in a related field. The certificates are 12 credit s each and are offered in nursing education and nursing administration functional role concentrations. The nationwide shortage of registered nurses includes a serious shortfall of leaders prepared at the graduate level in these two functional roles to meet the public’s demand for quality nursing care.
These post-master's certificates are designed for those nurses currently in or seeking a managerial or educational position in a variety of healthcare facilities or schools of nursing who require or desire competency in one of these functional roles. The Advanced Certificate Program addresses such needs and the program of study can be completed in one academic year of part-time enrollment.

This certificate is available to registered nurses who possess a bachelor’s degree in a field other than nursing and who desire eligibility to the master’s program without having to earn a BS in nursing before proceeding to the graduate level. To earn this certificate, applicants must satisfy the following pre-requisite undergraduate courses with a grade of “C” or better:
- MTH 110: Introduction to Statistics ( 3 cr.)
- NSG 315: Health assessment ( 3cr.)
- BIO 345: Pathophysiology ( 3 cr.)
- NSG 350: Research in Nursing (3 cr.)
- NSG 475: Transition to Advanced Practice (4 cr.) This transition course covers undergraduate nursing course content in the areas of family health, management/leadership, community health, and professional issues and trends.
