National Science Foundation, Research Experiences for Undergraduates - U.S. and abroad

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is a Federal government organization that, among other things, funds a large number of research experiences for undergraduates (REU's). The host institutions are invariably other colleges and universities at sites in the U.S. or abroad. Students receive generous stipends and in most cases assistance with housing and travel. Most experiences last for 10 weeks in the summer.

As well as research, the hosts usually offer career counseling, seminars, educational trips to other institutions, recreation, and fun outings. At the sites students work alongside other students from all across the country, and in most sites will work under the guidance of faculty. Opportunities are usually limited to current freshmen thru juniors and exist across a broad range of disciplines including biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, earth sciences, materials research, and ocean sciences.

Students may not apply to NSF to participate in REU activities. Students apply directly to REU Sites and should consult the directory of active REU Sites on the Web at
http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5517&org=NSFF or more information and any other assistance you might need to contact Career Services. These are wonderful opportunities, some of which have made huge differences in the careers and lives of Le Moyne natural science undergraduates.
