Service Learning Forms and Procedures Guidelines for Service-Learning Course Participation Course Credit: Credit is given for the reflection that is done on the service experience that shows the student can make the connection between the experience and the course objectives. It is helpful to process this as the semester progresses. Possibilities for this reflection include: Blackboard discussion groups, journals, class presentations, panel discussion in class with agency representatives, reflection papers etc. A minimum number of hours can be set ( e.g 12 – 20 – a number of agencies would prefer a weekly commitment for a semester) or your professor can assign a specific project ( e.g. making a video; doing research) Behavior and Attendance: Agencies count on students being there at the agreed time. They have provided staff time to arrange your placements and, in some cases, are counting on you to have a successful program. Failure to show up at your agency without notifying the agency in a timely manner or complaints about inappropriate behavior will lower the service-learning portion of your grade for the course. Expectations for site placement: Students involved in service-learning classes at Le Moyne College represent the college at the agencies to which they are assigned. They are expected to respect all the rules and requirements of the community agency and dress in a professional manner. Students must fulfill any training requirement mandated by the agency and/or course before they begin the service. A student’s placement will be immediately terminated for: any type of sexual misconduct/harassment, drug or alcohol use or failure to cooperate with the agency staff. Service-learning Office expectations: Students are required to submit the required paper work to Gloria Heffernan by the stated deadlines or they may not be assigned a placement and/ or transportation in a timely manner. Transportation will be arranged if a student does not have transportation. Violations of the van policy and/or failure to show up for the scheduled transportation will result in the student having to find his/her own transportation. Transportation is not provided to agencies which are within reasonable walking distance, except at night. The service-learning experience will be evaluated at the end of each semester by an evaluation developed either by Gloria Heffernan or the course professor, depending on the preference of the faculty member. Some faculty may opt to do a pre and post assessment. The assessment will include an evaluation of the placement site by the student. Agencies may be asked to evaluate the performance of the student. Unless a class actually meets at the agency, a letter of introduction with the course expectations should be sent with the student to the agency. ( Form will be provided). Service Learning Evaluation Form Download evaluation form (pdf) Please e-mail your form as an attachment to: heffergc@lemoyne.edu or if you prefer to be anonymous, feel free to mail it to: Gloria Heffernan, Office of Service Learning, RH342, Le Moyne College 1419 Salt Springs Road, Syracuse, NY 13214-1301 Transportation information for service learning students: TRANSPORTATION IS NOT PROVIDED UNLESS YOU HAVE GIVEN AT LEAST 48 HOURS NOTICE. YOU CANNOT USE THE VAN UNLESS YOU ARE ON THE SCHEDULE Service van: The college has a van to transport students to sites around the city. The van leaves Le Moyne at: 8:30; 9:30 (Tu/Th 9:50); 10:30; 11:30, 12:30 (Tu/Th 12:50); 1:30; 2:30, 4:30.The last time is a pick-up time for the earlier times. Students can be picked up at the same time other students are dropped off during the day (e.g. you can go at 8:30 and be picked up when the 2:30 people are dropped off). If you take the van, you must leave at least 30 minutes travel time and an hour at the 5 o’clock as there are several pick-ups. The 5:00 van is not back in time for a 5:30 class! Any student who misuses the van, gives the driver a hard time or misses his/her appointed time on several occasions will be taken off the van list and will have to arrange his/her own transportation. Other options: a. Van: individuals (or groups) may schedule it for use on the week-ends or in the evenings. To do that we need one person who can drive the van (clean driver’s license, approved by security and more than 6 months of driving). Please see Gloria if you are interested. b. Taxi: Some individuals or groups are scheduled to go by taxi. This can only be arranged by Gloria Heffernan ahead of time. The taxi will not pick up any student who has not been scheduled through the Service-Learning office. If a site is within walking distance, e.g. Solace School or Springfield Gardens, transportation is not provided. To use the van, you need to indicate that on your form and then Gloria will arrange it. The college will not tell you to car pool because of liability issues. Our insurance covers the van service. If you do decide to car pool, you should check with your parents before transporting other students to see if your insurance covers it. PLEASE DO NOT LEND YOUR CAR TO ANOTHER STUDENT!
