The Koonducks are Le Moyne’s men’s rugby football club established circa 1978 by Tim Cronin. Originally known as the Layzers until the 1980’s when the team changed their name to the infamous and beloved Koonducks. Since then the team has continued to grow into a closely knit, well known team around the campus of Le Moyne. Competing in the Division II New York State Empire East Division, the Koonducks play year around in both a fall and spring season.
The Koonduck Rugby Football Club play 15’s in the fall season every year against the likes of SUNY Oswego, Hamilton, SUNY Geneseo, etc. They also have a spring season in which they participate in a variety of tournaments ranging from Oswego’s Annual Greased Weasel 15’s tournament to Fort Drum’s Blue Balls 10’s tournament. Each spring the Koonducks play a handful of the same and some different tournaments to see new and old competition while improving the team for the fall season. The team is led by new head coach Bob Figueiredo who recently replaced Pat Foran in the fall of 2013. Bob Figueiredo played and graduated from Buff State University and led the team to playoffs - in his first season as head coach - for the first time in eight years during the 2013 fall season.
The Koonducks are the oldest club sport at Le Moyne and one of the older athletic teams at the school. The team carries a lot of tradition on and off the field. The Koonducks are largely responsible for Le Moyne’s Dolphy Day spring festival which has been taking place every year at Le Moyne since the late 1970’s. Not only are the Koonducks a large part of the social environment at the school but they also help the community and school out many other ways. They are large contributors to the annual Relay-for-Life event and many rugby club members are heavily involved in other campus organizations making Le Moyne Rugby a well-known team on campus. Every spring the old and new Koonducks come together for their alumni weekend and alumni play current players for the golden boot. The current Koonducks have beat the alumni team the past two years in the 2013 and 2014 spring alumni games and are looking for their third victory in a row this spring
