Sentencing Youth to Die in Prison in the US

The 2017 Rev. Daniel Berrigan, S.J./ International House Peacemaker Lecture Presents:

    “These aren’t children, they’re monsters.”

Sentencing Youth to Die in Prison in the US: A Story about the Destructive Force of Fear and the Privilege of Standing with the Despised

Decades of “tough on crime” policies in the US have left a trail of wasted human potential and failed to offer healing to victims of violence. These laws have also resulted in thousands of children being tried as adults and sentenced to extremely long prisons terms, including the sentence of life in prison with no possibility of parole. Social activist Elizabeth Calvin will address the effects of these practices, elements of the campaign to change the law, and lessons about hope and human dignity she learned from youth sentenced to adult prison.

Calvin is a senior advocate with Human Rights Watch and led the effort to change these laws in California. She conducts research on human rights violations and pushes for change through policy and legal advocacy.

Established in 2000, the Rev. Daniel Berrigan, S.J./International House Peacemaker Endowment was created to honor International House’s founder and one of the great Catholic social activists of the 20th century. It is sponsored by the Center for Peace and Global Studies, the Sanzone Center for Catholic Studies and Theological Reflection, International House alumni, and the Office of Alumni and Parent Engagement.
