Meet Andrew Lunetta

Andrew Lunetta

Andrew Lunetta’s family taught him at an early age that it is important to become involved in issues of social justice.

As a child Andrew regularly volunteered at a soup kitchen near his home in Boston, Mass. Then, after graduating from high school, he spent one year volunteering with the AmeriCorps program in Cleveland, Ohio, teaching and volunteering at a homeless shelter. When he arrived at Le Moyne in the fall of 2008, Andrew began volunteering at the Oxford Street Inn, a men’s shelter, and “fell in love with the place.” He went on to establish a drop-in center where the residents can have a cup of coffee, play cards, read or simply share. He also spearheaded a bag lunch program for the Samaritan Center, a local organization providing hot meals to those in need.

In addition to those initiatives, the peace and global studies major founded Pedal to Possibilities, an organization that provides homeless people in the region with the opportunity for exercise and fellowship during bike rides through Syracuse several times per week. After an individual has participated in 10 rides, he or she is given a bicycle.

Lunetta has volunteered internationally as well. He spent six months in Nogales, Mexico, working at the Kino Border Initiative, a collaborative, binational effort that engages Catholic education and faith formation, outreach, research and advocacy on both sides of the U.S./ Mexican border. He worked in the organization’s soup kitchen, cooking, serving and cleaning.

Lunetta has not yet decided whether he wants to go into public policy or direct social service after he graduates from Le Moyne, but he said that the experiences he has had at the College have inspired him and given him an even deeper appreciation of the opportunities before him.

“I know they (are going) to have a huge impact on how I approach my classes from now on, and how I approach life in general,” he said.
