Happening in and around the College.

    April 06, 2018

George Coyne S.J. and Bill Barrett '78 Honored at Le Moyne in New York

More than 200 alumni and friends of the College were in attendance at the sixth annual Le Moyne in New York event, which took place April 5 at the Loeb Boathouse in Central Park. Distinguished honorees at the event were:

George Coyne, S.J., the McDevitt Chair in Physics at Le Moyne College and the long-time former director of the Vatican Observatory who also served for many years as professor of astronomy at the University of Arizona. Over the course of his career, Father Coyne has been the driving force behind multiple new educational and research initiatives. These include the Vatican Observatory Summer School and the Vatican Observatory Research Group in Tucson, where he studied the surfaces of the moon and Mercury, interstellar matter, binary stars and distant galaxies in order to gain a better understanding of them. And in his tenure at Le Moyne thus far, one of his greatest joys has been to help expand undergraduate research in the natural sciences through a fellowship program that sponsors student-led investigations of a variety of topics, including environmental pollution and climate change. Learn more about Father Coyne and his many accomplishments in this tribute video.

Bill Barrett '78 recently retired as a partner from Ernst and Young (EY), one of the world’s most highly respected professional services firms. Throughout his 38 year career with EY, he provided accounting, auditing and advisory services to major U.S. and global financial services, media and entertainment, manufacturing and technology companies, and held significant strategic and operational leadership roles within the firm. Since retiring in 2016, Bill has served as an adjunct professor at the Madden School of Business at Le Moyne, teaching classes in enterprise risk management and accounting information systems. He was a nine-year member of the College's Board of Trustees and currently serves on the Board of Directors and Audit Committee of a NASDAQ traded bank entity. Learn more about Bill here.

The event raised nearly $125,000 that will be used for student scholarship at Le Moyne College.
