Sebaah Hamad ’18 Named Newman Civic Fellow

Sebaah Hamad ’18 has dedicated herself to creating educational opportunities that address social issues. Whether working to promote a positive self image among the members of a local Girl Scout troop or teaching Islamic studies to the children at her mosque, Hamad strives to create a sense of community that is both powerful and affirming. It is through this work that she is already having a long-term impact.

An English major, Hamad was recently honored for her work with Campus Compact’s Newman Civic Fellow Award. It recognizes inspiring student leaders like Hamad who are using service, research and advocacy to find solutions to some of the most serious challenges facing communities throughout the country.

In addition to her efforts in the in the community, Hamad has done a great deal of work in raising awareness of social issues on the Le Moyne campus. In the spring of 2015, she planned and moderated a panel discussion titled “Do Muslim Women Need Liberation?” that served as a forum for Muslim women to take control of their narrative. She also spoke about Islam at Le Moyne during Islam Awareness Week.

Beyond public forums like those, Hamad uses her role as an Upward Bound tutor and Amnesty International officer to encourage others to value themselves and their contributions to society.

“I firmly believe that educational programs should teach value of oneself, others, and the community as a whole,” she said.

The Newman Civic Fellow Award was created in honor of Frank Newman, a founder of Campus Compact, a coalition of more than 1,100 colleges representing more than 1.8 million students involved community engagement programs.
