When voters elect the next president of the United States, they will be selecting the person likely to nominate the next several justices to the Supreme Court, since five of the current justices are at least 70 years old. The Supreme Court has had a profound impact on the lives of most of today's voters, deciding cases on monumental issues from desegregation and voter rights to the death penalty and eminent domain. What does history tell us about presidents and their Supreme Court appointments? How can voters assess how a candidate is likely to approach that task?
