LE MOYNE COLLEGE
Academic Services to Students with Special Needs
Le Moyne College supports students' entitlements as stated
in Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the 1990 American
Disabilities Act.
The ASC arranges academic accommodations for students with
special needs (physical, learning and emotional). Services include:
pre- and post-admission consultation; review of diagnostic testing
administered in the past; informal academic advising; presentation of
self-advocacy skills for students; liaison and advocacy measures with
faculty and staff; and accommodations as deemed reasonable in consultation
with affected faculty members (e.g. time extensions for tests; alternative
testing sites; recorded texts and note takers).
In order to ensure that the students with learning disabilities
receive appropriate and reasonable accommodations, the following information
is requested:
The student must provide written documentation of
a specific learning disability from a licensed psychiatrist, physician
or certified personnel for learning disabilities. It is suggested
that the documentation be current. The documentation must contain
the following:
-information from a standardized aptitude test, (e.g.,
WAIS-R) and an educational battery (e.g., Woodcock-Johnson Psycho-educational
Battery); subtest scores (e.g., WAIS-R Verbal and Performance test subtest
scores); and tests of achievement (e.g., Woodcock-Johnson Psycho-Educational
Battery-Revised: Tests of Achievement)
-any written documentation of special education services
received during elementary and/or secondary school (e.g., IEP)
-a DSM IV diagnosis of a specific learning disability
-identification of learning strengths and weaknesses
-levels of learning strengths and weaknesses
-levels of cognitive functioning (verbal vs. performance
IQ scores)
-statements concerning social and emotional development
-diagnostic summary with recommendations for appropriate
classroom accomodations, as substantiated by assessment and diagnosis
in report
Students with Special Needs also have access to the same
support services provided to all students--individual sessions with
professionals in the ASC regarding study skills and learning strategies,
ASC Workshops provided each fall semester, and individual and small-group
tutoring in writing, mathematics, and the natural sciences.
