in memoriam
Robert A. Mitchell, S.J.: 1926-2006
As this magazine was going to press, we received word of the untimely death of Le Moyne’s former president and dear friend, Robert A. Mitchell, S.J. More on Mitchell and his impact on the College will follow in the next issue.

Robert A. Mitchell, S.J., who served as 10th president of Le Moyne College, died unexpectedly on October 5 while on a cruise with his brother and sister-in-law. He was 80 years old.

Mitchell served as president of Le Moyne from 1993 until 2000 and remained a close friend of the College long after his departure. Last year, the College presented him with the Simon Le Moyne Medal during Founders’ Day ceremonies in recognition of his contributions to Le Moyne College and to the mission of Jesuit education.

Born in New York City in 1926, Mitchell entered the Society of Jesus in 1943. He first came to Le Moyne in 1950 as a professor of philosophy and quickly won a reputation among students as a skillful and dynamic teacher. He left three years later to pursue further theological studies but returned in 1958. A year later, he was named academic dean, making him, at age 33, the youngest academic dean of any college in the country.

In 1966, Mitchell left the Heights to serve as rector of Loyola Seminary in Shrub Oak, N.Y., and from there went on to hold several top leadership positions with the Society of Jesus. In 1979, he was named president of University of Detroit and played a key role in that institution’s merger with Mercy College.

Mitchell returned to Le Moyne as president in 1993 and over the next seven years oversaw the development of a new strategic plan and mission statement, creation of graduate programs in business and education, growth in enrollment and diversity, and the enormously successful Tradition With Vision capital campaign. At the time of his death, Mitchell was living in Manhattan and serving as the superior of the Jesuit community at America House.

A wake was held at America House on October 12 with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Ignatius Loyola Church in New York City the following day. Burial was in the Jesuit Cemetery, Auriesville, N.Y. Notes of condolence may be sent to his brother and sister-in-law, William and Barbara Mitchell, at 95 Windstone Drive, San Rafael, Calif. 94903; gifts in his memory may be sent to the Mitchell Chair in Christian Wisdom, Le Moyne College Office of Institutional Advancement, 1419 Salt Springs Road, Syracuse, NY 13214.
