Evolution and God’s Grandeur

Thanks for keeping alums in touch with your wonderful publication, Le Moyne Magazine. I was especially pleased with the Spring 2006 issue, in particular the Science & Religion section. As past president of the Allegany County, Maryland, board of education and as a legislative aide for the Maryland General Assembly, I had to prepare to face a major concern on school policies regarding evolution and intelligent design. I testified against a bill that would allow the teaching of intelligent design in some science classes. Fortunately, the bill died in committee. When it resurfaces, I will be better prepared because of Br. Consolmagno’s brilliant responses to the issue.
The other article in that section, “Views From the Classroom,” hit home big time. I especially identified with the remarks of Dr. Ring. For many years I have struggled with my spiritual beliefs. My late life partner was a scientist and a very spiritual man, educated by Dominicans (which was often a source of friendly debate). He reintroduced me to Thomas Aquinas.
Every morning after meditating, I look at the beauty around me and, like Dr. Ring, give thanks. Dr. Donald Lawless made us memorize Gerard Manley Hopkins’ poem, God’s Grandeur. Yes, the world is truly charged with the grandeur of our Uncaused Cause! Thank you, Le Moyne, for an outstanding education.
