Theater Department Adds Education Certification

In a new opportunity for
Le Moyne’s theater and education students, the College’s theater program has partnered with the education department to offer students New York state certification to teach theater arts in grades K-12. The two departments will utilize shared faculty and curriculum to prepare students for careers as specialists in theater education.

Although many Le Moyne theater alumni presently direct school drama clubs, the New York State Education Department in 2004 mandated that future teachers of theater arts must possess theater certification as a content area. The new Le Moyne degree will fulfill this mandate and address a real need in school districts around the entire state.
The Le Moyne theater program already has experience in allied areas, from Gifford Family Theatre productions for young audiences, to providing design and technical assistance for surrounding high school drama groups. Theater in Education majors will often get student teacher placements with Le Moyne graduates who have already used their theater skills for school productions and in the classroom.

“We’re very excited,” says Director of Theater Karel Blakeley. “Theater majors will be able to choose one of two curricular tracks: elementary or secondary education. Next year we’ll be adding courses for the graduate program in education and offer a second master’s degree for teachers already certified in other areas such as language arts. This is a significant advance for our program.”

Le Moyne Takes Music Program to New Heights

In its 60th anniversary year, Le Moyne College will launch and develop important initiatives in the music area. Le Moyne’s music minor has been reshaped into a two-track system: jazz and classical. Students can earn a music minor through courses, instrumental lessons, and participation in the department’s musical ensembles.

Two new faculty have been hired to help this mission. Director of Jazz Studies J.C. Sanford, an accomplished trombonist, composer and conductor, earned his doctorate at New England Conservatory, where he studied with the legendary Bob Brookmeyer and conducted the NEC Little Big Band. Sanford leads the improvisational trio Triocracy with Andy Laster and Chris Bacas and has also performed around the Boston and New York areas with Maria Schneider, Allan Chase, Chico & Arturo O’Farrill, and the Danilo Pérez Trio on the soundtrack of “Hugo Pool” – directed by Robert Downey Sr. As a composer/arranger/ bandleader, Sanford co-leads the Schumacher/Sanford Sound Assembly and conducts the Grammy-nominated John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble.

Director of Vocal Studies Joanna Manring grew up in Skaneateles, where she studied with soprano Helen Boatwright. Manring went on to earn degrees at SUNY-Geneseo and Syracuse University, where she worked with soprano Janet Brown. She currently is completing her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Peabody Conservatory, studying with 20th-century music luminary Phyllis Bryn-Julson. Manring served as a graduate assistant in the Peabody voice department and as a teaching assistant in musicology at Johns Hopkins. She has performed with Syracuse Opera, Oswego Opera, the Skaneateles Festival and Peabody Chamber Opera, and as a soloist with the New York Chorale at Weill Recital Hall.

The new Muzik + @ Le Moyne program will open the doors for advanced high school juniors and seniors to take courses or participate in performance ensembles at Le Moyne, in some cases receiving college credit. This program is an extension of Le Moyne’s 2006-07 partnership with Junior Pro Art, in which a series of eight master classes and recitals for talented pre-college students are being held in Le Moyne’s W. Carroll Coyne Center for the Performing Arts.

Le Moyne’s 2006-07 Music Journeys concert series opened in September with the first-ever appearance of Syracuse Symphony Orchestra musicians on campus. The concert featured the SSO string section and trumpeter George Coble, led by Daniel Hege in works by Dmitri Shostakovich. The series also has slated visits by cellist Edward Arron, pianists Bruce Brubaker and Anthony Molinaro, flutist Marya Martin, Dutch rock guitarist/composer Jacob ter Veldhuis, and CNY gems pianist Robert Auler, violinist Jeremy Mastrangelo and the Excelsior Cornet Band.
