Dolphy Day and Beautiful Weather!

Hello again!

I can't believe it was a week ago tomorrow that we had Dolphy Day!  The day couldn't have been better, with the sun shining, a nice cool breeze, lots of hot dogs and hamburgers, and very happy students splayed out all over the quad.

Like every year, there were many rumors as to when the big day would be, but the wizard on the rugby team made a good choice, and last Thursday it was!  Now when I say wizard, I mean the chosen member of eiher the men's or women's rugby team that is in charge of declaring this joyful day.

As a junior, I've got the routine down pretty well, but watching the freshmen experience their first Dolphy Day made me remember how exciting it is to have a day off from classes (potentially) and relax with fellow students in great weather.

Some highlights of my day included a "farmer's tan," whiffle ball, nap(s), rocking to the live bands, and heavy food consumption.  It was great!

Since Dolphy Day, the weather here has been perfect, and all the buds blossoming on the trees on campus makes it hard to stay inside for classes.  This is always a tough part of the year, because there's the most work to be done with the least motivation to do so.  So far I've been staying somewhat focused, and combined with our success in the housing lottery yesterday, things are going well!

Thanks for reading my blog this year, I hope it helped or at least entertained!

Housing Lottery

A few weeks ago everyone received housing lottery cards. Which color card you got depended on the amount of credits each person has at the end of the Fall semester. Most future sophomores received a blue card because they have a lower amount of credits than the aspiring juniors, who attain green cards. Luckily, one of my suitemates had 30 credits, which is enough to have junior status. Our group had eight blue cards and one green card. This means that we go before the groups that consist of all the soon-to-be sophomores, but we go after groups that have two or three juniors.

Cold, Cold, Getting Warmer...

This past weekend my roommate went home and I hung out with my friends. I wasn’t too happy last Friday due to the fact my parents and my brother left to go to Cancun. Apparently, they couldn’t plan their vacation around my schedule or wait until the summer. I get to stay in beautiful, chilly Syracuse while my brother texts me, bragging how much warmer it is in Cancun. However, if I did miss a week here, I wouldn’t be able to catch up before the end of the semester.

Beautiful weather!

Hey everyone!  I'm sooo happy to report that the weather is finally looking up at Le Moyne!  I hope you're all enjoying it too!  This week, I just want to express how GREAT it felt on Tuesday when I got out of class and found the quad FULL of students enjoying the nice weather.  There were some girls tossing around a lacrosse ball in front of Dablon, ultimate frisbee in front of Nelligan, some of Le Moyne's finest musicians out entertaining people with their guitars, and plenty of guys throwing a football around in front of the library.  It just absolutely made my day!

Homework, Studying, and Tests

The school year is coming to an end and professors haven’t fulfilled their yearly quota for torture! Students are being bombarded with assignments and tests, as the end of the year approaches. However, that long dark tunnel of chaos will come to an end soon enough. The spring semester seems considerably shorter than the fall semester. With the decent weather, students are that much more anxious to finish classes.

Housing Lottery

Hello again!

This past week we received our lottery cards for next year's housing.

I thought I'd take the opportunity to explain just how that works.

Every student living on campus will get a card, and depending on the number of credits you have, you'll either get a senior, junior, or sophomore card.

Obviously the more credits you have, the better, because you have seniority and a better chance of getting your first choice for housing.

If you don't have a ton of out-of-the-ordinary credits, don't panic!  It balances out by randomly assigning numbers within each of the different levels of cards.  The combination of the highest status (senior card, junior card, then sophomore card) and the lowest number on your card are the components of the housing lottery.

Depending on where you'd like to live, students sort it out with their friends, and usually the person with the strongest card gets in line to sign up for the campus housing of their dreams.

Again, students line up in order of highest seniority/lowest number cards.  This can be a bit chaotic, but with the variety of students with different hopes for living, the majority of students get to live where they want.

It's always an exciting time of year, especially for freshman who are moving on to bigger and better things like suite-style living, or even a shot at the Townhouses or Heights.

Our housing lottery is not far away, so wish me luck and I'll let you know how things turn out!

Prospective Student’s Stay and Housing

Last Friday my roommate and I hosted another prospective student. He arrived at 3:30pm with other students looking at Le Moyne from the Massachusetts area. He didn’t have to attend any classes with me because I don’t have classes after 12:20 on Friday. As we were walking back to my dorm, I gave him a brief overview of the college. He set up all of his stuff on the carpet in the middle of our room and I introduced him to the rest of the floor. Honestly, I didn’t know what to do initially. Normally after a long week, I just like to lie in my bed and do as little as possible, but I made quite an effort to do something constructive like playing video games. For the rest of the night we continued to have a low key night. Our guest fell asleep much earlier we did, since we normally don’t go to bed until around 2 a.m. The next morning brunch was changed from 11-1pm to 9-11am due to Accepted Students Day. After breakfast I showed him the way back to the Office of Admission so he could get ready for Accepted Students Day.

Yes! 2 Dolphins in the Family

Hi again!

What a weekend it was for my family!  They came up to Le Moyne for Accepted Students Day, and since my brother was indeed accepted into this fine institute, he came!

I was busy most of the day with the tour guides and mingling with families, but by the end of the day I was surprised and delighted to hear that my brother has decided to come to Le Moyne next year!

At first I figured he was being sarcastic again, especially since my mom has been dying for him to make a decision since December.  But that was not the case, and to celebrate we all loaded up on bread at Panera before they hit the road.

It's going to be nice to have John on campus next year.  I really won't see him unless we plan to, so he'll be able to get the full freshman college experience without my getting in the way or embarrassing him.  This is similar to my senior year of high school, when the little guy came in as a freshman.  What fun it will be to shove him into lockers and take his lunch money-or should I say munch money!  Ok that was a bit of a stretch.

Back to Accepted Students Day, or ASD as the cool folks call it, there was a great showing!  There were so many families that attended, and once it looked like everyone had registered, more showed up.

My parents and I were asked by good 'ol Mr. Muench (a delightful counselor here) to be on a panel.  It was there that some other students and parents were asked questions by prospective Dolphin parents about the transition into college, what there is to do here, and whatnot.

It was interesting to hear my parents talk about their advice to other parents, and pretty amusing at times.  Overall everyone enjoyed themselves, and my only regret was that the panel ended so soon.

Well that's our Saturday in a nutshell, stay tuned for more fascinating entries to come!
