Dolphy Day and Beautiful Weather!

Hello again!

I can't believe it was a week ago tomorrow that we had Dolphy Day!  The day couldn't have been better, with the sun shining, a nice cool breeze, lots of hot dogs and hamburgers, and very happy students splayed out all over the quad.

Like every year, there were many rumors as to when the big day would be, but the wizard on the rugby team made a good choice, and last Thursday it was!  Now when I say wizard, I mean the chosen member of eiher the men's or women's rugby team that is in charge of declaring this joyful day.

As a junior, I've got the routine down pretty well, but watching the freshmen experience their first Dolphy Day made me remember how exciting it is to have a day off from classes (potentially) and relax with fellow students in great weather.

Some highlights of my day included a "farmer's tan," whiffle ball, nap(s), rocking to the live bands, and heavy food consumption.  It was great!

Since Dolphy Day, the weather here has been perfect, and all the buds blossoming on the trees on campus makes it hard to stay inside for classes.  This is always a tough part of the year, because there's the most work to be done with the least motivation to do so.  So far I've been staying somewhat focused, and combined with our success in the housing lottery yesterday, things are going well!

Thanks for reading my blog this year, I hope it helped or at least entertained!

Housing Lottery

Hello again!

This past week we received our lottery cards for next year's housing.

I thought I'd take the opportunity to explain just how that works.

Every student living on campus will get a card, and depending on the number of credits you have, you'll either get a senior, junior, or sophomore card.

Obviously the more credits you have, the better, because you have seniority and a better chance of getting your first choice for housing.

If you don't have a ton of out-of-the-ordinary credits, don't panic!  It balances out by randomly assigning numbers within each of the different levels of cards.  The combination of the highest status (senior card, junior card, then sophomore card) and the lowest number on your card are the components of the housing lottery.

Depending on where you'd like to live, students sort it out with their friends, and usually the person with the strongest card gets in line to sign up for the campus housing of their dreams.

Again, students line up in order of highest seniority/lowest number cards.  This can be a bit chaotic, but with the variety of students with different hopes for living, the majority of students get to live where they want.

It's always an exciting time of year, especially for freshman who are moving on to bigger and better things like suite-style living, or even a shot at the Townhouses or Heights.

Our housing lottery is not far away, so wish me luck and I'll let you know how things turn out!

Yes! 2 Dolphins in the Family

Hi again!

What a weekend it was for my family!  They came up to Le Moyne for Accepted Students Day, and since my brother was indeed accepted into this fine institute, he came!

I was busy most of the day with the tour guides and mingling with families, but by the end of the day I was surprised and delighted to hear that my brother has decided to come to Le Moyne next year!

At first I figured he was being sarcastic again, especially since my mom has been dying for him to make a decision since December.  But that was not the case, and to celebrate we all loaded up on bread at Panera before they hit the road.

It's going to be nice to have John on campus next year.  I really won't see him unless we plan to, so he'll be able to get the full freshman college experience without my getting in the way or embarrassing him.  This is similar to my senior year of high school, when the little guy came in as a freshman.  What fun it will be to shove him into lockers and take his lunch money-or should I say munch money!  Ok that was a bit of a stretch.

Back to Accepted Students Day, or ASD as the cool folks call it, there was a great showing!  There were so many families that attended, and once it looked like everyone had registered, more showed up.

My parents and I were asked by good 'ol Mr. Muench (a delightful counselor here) to be on a panel.  It was there that some other students and parents were asked questions by prospective Dolphin parents about the transition into college, what there is to do here, and whatnot.

It was interesting to hear my parents talk about their advice to other parents, and pretty amusing at times.  Overall everyone enjoyed themselves, and my only regret was that the panel ended so soon.

Well that's our Saturday in a nutshell, stay tuned for more fascinating entries to come!

3 Hour Power

Hi Everyone!

Well this is our first (and only) full week after spring break.  Next week we have time off for Easter! It should be pretty exciting; no one can refuse a chocolate bunny, and eating candy for breakfast is one of my favorite hobbies.

Science for an English Major

Hello! Hope you had a wonderful Valentine's Day!  Mine consisted of homework, playing raquetball, and receiving a lovely boquet of roses from my boyfriend.

Moving on to more interesting things, I thought I'd chat a little about the science class I'm taking this semester.  As an English major, this class was not required.  However, I have a little space to take elective classes, so Chemistry 117 it is!  This chemistry class is all about drugs and their effects on people.  We discuss prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, and illegal drugs.

The class is for non-science majors, but the structural makeup of different substances is still highly studied.  I'm finding it really eye-opening to be in a class where there is a lot less reading, and more focus on scientific concepts.  My brain has been trained to read and analyze for so long, that doing things like calculating the amount of drugs needed for someone of a certain weight, or breaking down the chemical structure of ibuprofen forces me to approach my studies in a completely different way!

Thankfully I know a couple students who are chemistry majors, and can depend on for last minute questions.  We're also doing a project with a partner, in which each group studies the structure, effects, etc of a specific drug.  My partner and I are studying nicotine.  Besides it being a very addictive drug, I don't know much about it, so this should turn out to be a very fun and interesting project.

When I was a freshman, I took another science class called  paleobiology, which was all about dinosaurs.  I had a lot of fun in that class, and now have a plethora of information about different types of dinosaurs!  I'm sure this will come in handy for a trivia game some day!

Basketball Saturday

          Hello Everyone!

This past Saturday, I went to both the Le Moyne Men's and Women's basketball games against Stonehill College.  Unfortunately the girls lost, but one of their best players hit her record high of scoring 20 points during the game!  The Men's team won by a point, and definitely earned the victory.

Both teams were playing hard, and it was easy to see how much time and practice they put in to compete successfully at a Division II level.

I was surprised at how many fans came from the opposing team, but Le Moyne held up its side of the bleachers too.  During the Men's game, a boisterous group of shirtless students painted their chests with Dolphin pride, and didn't stop cheering until the game was over.  As distracting as they were to me, I can only imagine how difficult they made foul shots for the other team to complete.

These were my first games of the season for me, and I'm extremely glad that I made it to see our teams play.  It's exciting to see fellow classmates on the court playing hard, and it also makes me feel proud to support the games.

Back in Action

Hello everyone!

It's great to be back at 'ol Le Moyne for another exciting semester.

Classes started a week ago, but my roomates and I agree that it feels like it's been a month already!  The workload started right off the bat, and in a way it feels like I never left.  This is the time of year when staying on top of your game is most important.  It's hard to motivate yourself to get back into the dilligent studying routine.  A month's worth of intense guitar hero training abruptly stopped and replaced with British literature articles can take some getting used to (and I am proud to say that I am a sold level "hard" player on guitar hero III) .

Although everyone's schedules are radically different, my rule of thumb is to do at least part of the homework I receive each day, every day.  That way it doesn't pile up and I don't stay up until all hours of the night!  Besides staying up to date with assignments, it's extremely beneficial to exercise on a regular basis.  Letting out some built up work anxiety really helps you to focus on getting things done, and of course to stay in shape.

Remember to have fun as well, and get excited about learning new stuff!

More to come soon!
