Promotion of Social Justice Issues
“The mission of the Society of Jesus is the service of faith, of which the promotion of justice is an absolute requirement, for reconciliation with God demands the reconciliation of people with one another.”
–32nd General Congregation of the Society of Jesus
Ignatian House, Amnesty International, Habitat for Humanity and the Ignatian Family Teach-In are just a few of the social justice programs sponsored by Campus Ministry that embody the hallmarks of a Le Moyne College education. Student participants deepen their relationship with God through consciousness-raising activities that challenge them to integrate faith and justice.
Upcoming activities:
- Community Wednesday - The third Wednesday of each month that school is in session, we will make sandwiches and deliver them to Oxford St. Inn. We will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be finished by 9:00 p.m. Le Moyne College students have had a long association with the Inn, a men's shelter run by Catholic Charities of Onondaga County.
- On October 2 there will be a trip to Hopps Memorial CME Church to attend a lecture on the death penalty. David Kaczynski, Executive Director of New Yorkers Against the Death Penalty (NYADP) and Bill Babbitt of Murder Victim's Family Members for Human Rights (MVFHR) will share their personal experiences that forever changed their lives. Ted Kaczynski, the so-called Unabomber, and Manny Babbitt, recipient of a Purple Heart from the Vietnam War, both mentally ill, were convicted on murder charges. David and Bill share similar but different experiences with their brothers in the criminal justice system; how one brother is sentenced to life without parole while the other is executed.
- Ignatian Family Teach-In - The Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice (IFTJ) is an annual event held to commemorate the Jesuits and laywomen who were martyred in 1989, to call for an end to unjust institutions, and to reflect on the Jesuit commitments to justice. Each year students from Le Moyne College are among the thousands of Jesuit high school and college students, clergy and lay people gathered in Columbus, GA for the Teach-in. Speakers reflect on a range of justice issues.
