Natural Systems Science

The Department of Biological Sciences at Le Moyne College is now offering a new major program, the B.S. in Natural Systems Science. In this program we emphasize a multidisciplinary, or systems approach to the study of global ecosystems and the environment and how they are changing, with emphasis on the relevant interactions of Earth’s biosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere.

Through this curricular innovation, we hope to achieve the following career and educational objectives:

  1. Train future researchers in a systems approach to scientific problems in general and problems of global environmental change in particular. Essential to the Natural Systems approach is the need to demonstrate the biological, chemical, geological, and physical processes that operate on both the laboratory and the global scales at various time ranges.
  2. Train a new generation of scientifically literate policy professionals on the use of scientific principles in environmental planning.
  3. Through introductory courses, educate a non-science student population (an important cohort of the voting public) on the interrelated nature of natural systems and the problems facing society due to natural and anthropogenic changes in the environment.

Some existing Biology courses as well as current supporting courses in Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics form an integral part of the Natural Systems Science Major. A limited number of new NSS/BIO courses have been developed specifically for this program, and more new courses are planned. Therefore, the specific course options within the major will continue to grow as new faculty in the Biology and Chemistry departments join the program. Additionally, specific courses drawn from the Peace and Global Studies Program, the departments of Political Science, Sociology, Philosophy, and English will be recommended for students in this program.
