Academic Services for Students with Special Needs

Student With Special Needs

Le Moyne College welcomes people with disabilities and, in compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended, and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, supports students' entitlements and does not discriminate on the basis of disability. Academic support services for students with disabilities are coordinated by the Director of Disability Support Services in the Academic Support Center.

Students with Special Needs have access to the same support services provided to all students--individual sessions with professionals in the ASC regarding study skills and learning strategies, ASC Workshops provided each fall semester, and individual and small-group tutoring in writing, mathematics, foreign languages, economics, and the natural sciences. In addition, students with disabilities receive individualized services through the ASC.

Our goal is to create collaborative partnerships that put students in the driver's seat of their education to enhance their chances for academic success.

The office provides and arranges accommodations for students with special needs due to learning, emotional, and temporary or permanent diagnostic referrals, review of previously administered diagnostic tests, informal academic advising, presentation of self-advocacy skills for students, and liaison and advocacy measures with faculty and staff. If applicable you will also need to connect with appropriate adult services agencies (e.g., VESID, CBVH, Learning Disabilities Association, etc.).

Documentation

The student  must provide documentation of his or her disabiling condition.  After documentation has been received, the student needs to set-up an initial meeting within the first two weeks of the semester or as soon as possible, in order to review teh documentation, recommended academic accommodations, the course schedule, and self-advocacy skills. More lead time is recommended for students with disabilities that necessitate accommodations that require more time to access, e.g., textbooks on tape.  During the initial meeting, the student will then receive a memo addressed to appropriate instructors detailing suggested academic accommodations supported by the documentation.

In addition, the Le Moyne College Disability Support Services staff assists in the facilitation of testing and other accommodations as deemed reasonable by the students' documented disabilities. Students are required to present appropriate documentation prior to receiving services. All accommodations are determined on a case-by-case basis to address the specific needs of each student as indicated in the documentation.

Testing and Disability Support Accommodations

Students with documented disabilities may be eligible for one or more of the following services:

  • Note-takers
  • Recorded texts
  • Access to adaptive technologies
  • Time extensions for exams
  • Alternative testing sites

Speaking with each of your professors concerning your needs is one of the most important responsibilities you will have. Be assured that the information you share with your professor concerning your disability is deemed strictly confidential and you should expect that what you say would not be shared with anyone else at the college. Timing is a very important factor in terms of communicating with your professors. Do it early in the semester, and in collaboration with the ASC, to ensure your academic success from the first day of classes.

Le Moyne College subscribes fully to all applicable federal and state legislation and regulations regarding discrimination. The College does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, creed, age, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, veteran status, or national or ethnic origin. Le Moyne College is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer. Please Note:  Students failing to identify their disability or arrange for special accommodations in the first few weeks of class assume responsibility for regular classroom procedures.  If they self-identify later in the semester, they must assume responsibility for the grade(s) achieved in class without accommodations prior to that time.

If you have questions, do not hesitate to contact the office at 315-445-4118 or asc@lemoyne.edu so we can be of further assistance.
