EDG 753 Teaching Regents and Honors Physics
Instructor: Joshua Buchman

Course Description

This is a one week seminar designed for teachers with little to no experience teaching high school physics. Although experienced teachers may find this course useful, it is designed to assist new teachers in their early years of teaching. This will be a combination content and pedagogy course. The focus will be on preparing teachers to teach a high school course for college-bound students from any state. We will also discuss the differences between what is appropriate for a basic level course versus an honors course. We will spend some time discussing New York standards and linking topics to them, but this will not be a major focus of the course and should not deter teachers from other states from participating.

Mornings will be spent discussing content and classroom pedagogy. The distinction will be made between what is appropriate for an honors class versus a Regents class. Afternoons will be spent in the laboratory.

Instructor Information
Josh has been teaching physics of various levels (Regents, honors, and AP) for over seven years.  He has a master's degree in science education and certifications in physics, chemistry, biology and earth science.  Josh has presented workshops to physics teachers at Syracuse University.  He is also the coach of the physics lab event for the Fayetteville-Manlius Science Olympiad team, which earned first place in the event (and as a team) in 2004 and second place in the event in 2005.  As a practicing high school teacher he will be able to deliver material participants will find useful in the classroom.  As an experienced performer he will also demonstrate ways to tie in your outside interests and make the content more interesting and relevant to the students.
