Students earning an English major with a concentration in literature choose from a variety of courses that provide them with both a firm grounding in literary history and the opportunity to pursue their own interests in specialized fields of literary study.
At the core of the program are courses organized by time periods, such as the Anglo-Saxon and late Medieval epochs, Colonial America, the Victorian age, and the Modern and Contemporary periods. Other courses offer concentrated study of particular genres—such as the Novel, Epic Poetry, Satire, Drama, and Film—or of single authors, including Mark Twain, Virginia Woolf, William Butler Yeats, and Maya Angelou. Still other courses focus on specialized or advanced topics such as literary theory, literature and psychology, gender and literature, African American literature, the literature of Ireland, as well as Anglophone literatures written by Caribbean, African, and Asian authors.
