Founding

1992 Programs

March 28, 1992. San Diego, CA. Program: Prof. Seymour Cain, (author of Gabriel Marcel, South Bend, IN, Regnery/Gateway, 1963 and 1979) shared reflections drawn from letters he received from Gabriel Marcel over the many years of their friendship. Cain spoke of Marcel's thought in relation to that of M. Buber, M. Heidegger, E. Hocking, E. Husserl, E. Levinas, and M. Scheler. Cain's talk was entitled, "Encounters with Gabriel Marcel, the Person and His Thought". Prof. Brendan Sweetman, Loyola Marymount, spoke on "Gabriel Marcel's Critique of Descartes and its Significance for classical philosophical problems". There followed a dramatic reading of The Double Expertise, a one-act comedy by Gabriel Marcel, delightfully interpreted by a group from the College of Theater Arts at the University of San Diego, under the direction of Prof. Eric Grischkat, Prof. K. R. Hanley, Chairperson.

2001 Programs

October 18-21 2001

For the first time the Gabriel Marcel Society met with the annual conference of the American Maritain Association (AMA). The AMA conference was in Boca Raton, Florida. Brendan Sweetman (Rockhurst University) delivered a paper, "Ethics within a Christian Existentialism", and Tom Michaud presented "Marcel on Truth, Justice and Human Fellowship" .

 

November 9-11, 2001

Meeting with the American Catholic Philosophical Association at the annual national convention, Nov. 9-11, 2001 at the Albany Crowne Plaza Hotel in Albany, NY . Conference Theme: "Soul, Person and Immortality". Plenary Session Speakers: Marilyn Adams (Yale University); Alfred Freddoso (University of Notre Dame); Edwin Curley (University of Michigan). James F. Ross, Professor of Philosophy and Law, University of Pennsylvania, ACPA Vice-President/President-Elect.

The GMS session included the playing of an audio tape of Marcel delivering one of his "Willima James Lectures" (published in the volume entitled, "The Existential Background of Human Dignity" and the text of his lecture was distributed. Robert O'BRien (Fordham University) served as chair and discussant for the program; and Raymond Boisvert (Sienna College) was also a discussant.

In conjunction with the November 9-11 ACAP Albany meeting, but separate from the GMS session, there was a "Concert Reading" of "Dot the I" (a drama) and "The Double Expertise" (a comedy), two one act plays by Gabriel Marcel, translated by Katharine Rose Hanley, directed by John Morrison and performed by NY City professional actors,

October 17-20 2002

The Gabriel Marcel Society met jointly with the American Maritain Association, Oct. 17-20, 2002 at Princeton University, Princeton, NJ . The event was sponsored by the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions, Princeton University. The Conference Chair was Christopher Cullen, S.J., Fordham University.

The Marcel Society Session: "Marcel the Litterateur", Chaired by K. R. Hanley will had three Presenters, Thomas Michaud, Wheeling Jesuit University, "Marcel the Catholic Writer; Teresa Reed, Rockhurst University, "Parts and Wholes in Marcel's Essays"; and Brendan Sweetman, Rockhurst University, "Marcel and Phenomenology: Can Literature Help Philosophy?"

Gabriel Marcel's one act play, The Lantern, (an Existential Drama), was performed by a full cast of New York City Professional Actors. It is an intriguing inquiry about the light of truth illuminating interpersonal relations. In it Marcel introduces the concept of a loved ones presence after death. The play takes an unexpected turn, in its final scene, and the audience is left with a sense of surprise and wonder.

The Gabriel Marcel Society met jointly with The American Maritain Association in Chicago, Illinois. The event was co-sponsored by the Lumen Christi Institute at the University of Chicago. The theme of the conference was: "The Human Person and the Culture of Freedom." Speakers were Jean Bethke Elshtain, Cardinal George, Alasdair MacIntyre, and Ralph McInerny.

The Gabriel Marcel Society met jointly with the American Catholic Philosophical Association, in Houston Texas, The theme of the conference was "Philosophy and Intercultural Understanding." Plenary session speakers included: ACPA President David Burrell (University of Notre Dame, and the Tantur Institute, Jerusalem), Deirdre Carabine (Uganda Martyrs University), Faustina Pereira (Advocate, Supreme Court of Bangladesh), Jacques Poulain (UNESCO Chair of Philosophy and the University of Paris). The 2003 ACPA Aquinas Medal was presented to Michael Dummett of Oxford University.

2004 Programs

The Gabriel Marcel Society met jointly with the American Catholic Philosophical Association, in Miami Florida, hosted by Barry University. ACPA President Nicholas Rescher set the conference theme as "Reckoning with the Tradition." The plenary session speakers were Bonnie Kent (University of California,Irvine): the Franciscan tradition; Ian Ker (Oxford University): John Henry Newman; Gareth Matthews (University of Massachusetts): Augustine; and James Ross (University of Pennsylvania): Aquinas.

2005 Programs

October, 2005

The American Catholic Philosophical Association met at the University of Notre Dame. Its theme is "Social Justice: Its Theory and Practice".
Plenary Session speakers were: James Marsh (ACPA President, Fordham University; Drucilla Cornell (Rutgers University); William Desmond (University of Leuven); Enrique Dussel (Autonomous Metropolitan University of Mexico). At this meeting the Association's Aquinas Medal wil be presented to Brian Davies of Fordham University. Several satellite sessions are also being organized.

2006 Programs

October, 2006

The 2006 American Catholic Philosophical Association annual meeting was be held in Granville, Ohio and hosted by Denison University. The conference theme was "Intelligence and the Philosophy of Mind." Plenary session speakers were John Haldane (University of St. Andrews), Anthony Kenny (University of Oxford), and Kurt Pritzl (The Catholic Univewrsity of America). Anthony J.
