Personnel Policy Manual for Support Staff

SUBJECT: DEFINITION OF EMPLOYEE CLASSIFICATIONS

POLICY STATEMENT:

In an effort to standardize terminology and provide common understanding in our references to non-exempt* employees the following definitions** have been established.

IMPLEMENTATION:

1. Employee
One who is paid a salary or wage directly by Le Moyne College.
2. Probationary Employee
Newly hired employee who has not yet successfully completed the designated probationary period. Upon successful completion, the employee is re-classified as a permanent employee.
3. Permanent Employee
An employee hired with the expectation of continued employment and who has successfully completed the probationary period.
4. Temporary Employee
An employee that is hired for a short or limited period of time. Fringe benefits do not apply, except for Social Security, Workers' Compensation and possibly New York State Disability depending upon the term of the assignment.
5. Full-time Employee
An employee working a minimum of thirty-five (35) hours per week and twelve (12) months per year. A full-time employee is eligible for all fringe benefits.
6. Academic Year Full-Time Employee
An employee working a minimum of thirty-five (35) hours per week and not less than twenty-six (26) weeks per year. An academic year full-time employee is eligible for vacation, sick leave and dental benefits on a pro-rata basis; one personal day; and holiday pay for those days falling within work schedult. Tuition benefits and health insurance premiums are not affected by academic full-time status.
7. Part-time Employee
An employee working less than thirty-five (35) hours per week. A part-time employee is eligible for pro-rata holiday pay and enrollment in health and Supplemental Retirement Annuities, with no College contributions.
*Non-exempt: employees who are not exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (Wage-Hour Act).
**All employees covered by these definitions are employed at will and may be subject to termination, with or without reason, at any time.
