Personnel Policy Manual for Support Staff

SUBJECT: EMPLOYMENT OF MINORS

POLICY STATEMENT:

Minor employees (under 18 years of age) may be employed by the College in accordance with the New York State Division of Labor Laws regarding work hour limitations.

IMPLEMENTATION:

1. It is the responsibility of the Director of Personnel to ensure that all minor employees obtain permits before employment.

2. Minors will not be scheduled for work until the necessary permits are on record with the Personnel Office (See Exhibit #304A).

3. When school is in session:

a. Minors who are twelve (12) to seventeen (17) years of age may not work more than twenty-eight (28) hours per week and four (4) hours per day, except they may work up to eight (8) hours on Fridays. Prohibited hours are after 10:00 p.m. unless they have written permission from their parents and their school verifying that they are in good academic standing.

4. When school is not in session:

a. Sixteen (16) and seventeen (17) years olds may not work more than six (6) days per week, nor more than eight (8) hours per day. Prohibited hours are after 10:00 p.m. unless there is parental consent.

5. Exemptions to the above regulations may be allowed for certain positions, as specified by the Department of Labor.
