Personnel Policy Manual for Support Staff

SUBJECT: ORIENTATION OF NEW EMPLOYEES

POLICY STATEMENT:

An orientation program will be provided for all new employees to acquaint them with the policies of Le Moyne College and

IMPLEMENTATION:

1. The Personnel Office:

a. On the first day of employment, the Personnel Office will provide a brief orientation session to explain organization practices and benefits.

b. The Personnel Office will initiate all necessary documents for a new employee for the payroll process.

2. Supervisor:

a. On the day before the new employee arrives, the department head/supervisor will:

  1. Prepare immediate associates.

  2. Ensure the desk/work station is clear and supplied.

  3. Ensure instructional materials are ready.

  4. Appoint a sponsor for the new employee. (department head/supervisor may act as the sponsor.)

b. On reporting day, the department head/supervisor will briefly review the job duties, tracing the work flow through the department, introduce the new employee to the sponsor, and begin job training. c. On the job training and work progress should be followed carefully and frequently enough to know that the employee understands the job and how it relates to the College as a whole. A copy of the employee's job description should be furnished, and reviewed with the employee during the first week. d. Department heads/supervisors shall plan for orientation of new employees in conjunction with the Personnel Office.

3. Sponsor:

a. On reporting day, ensure that the employee is greeted, shown location of facilities, work station or desk, and introduced to the people in the immediate work area.
b. Advise the employee of specific department rules and procedures. An Orientation Checklist (see Exhibit #311A) is furnished for the sponsor's guidance and use.
