SUBJECT: PROBATIONARY PERIOD
POLICY STATEMENT:
Recognizing the difficulties in predicting performance, a probationary period has been established to allow employees, under the most favorable conditions, to demonstrate their ability to perform their assigned duties. It is expected that each employee of the College will do all that is reasonably possible for the new members of the staff in the adjustment period. It is the responsibility of the department head/supervisor to provide support and guidance to assist new employees in adjusting to their work environment. Upon completion of the probationary period, the department head/supervisor will be asked by the Personnel Office to complete a Probationary Review form (see Exhibit #312A)
IMPLEMENTATION:
1. Each employee shall be deemed to be on probation for the first three (3) months or employment. However, the probationary period may be extended if there is a question regarding an individual's performance.
2. Should an employee be experiencing difficulties, the department head/supervisor shall complete an appraisal form, discuss it with the employee, and set goals and timetables for rectifying specific problems
. 3. During this period, the employee shall be entitled to no seniority status. After probation has been successfully completed, the employee will be accredited with seniority as of the date of hire.
4. Employees transferring from regular part time to full time status will not be required to begin a new probationary period if the job is in the same job category.
5. During this period, the employee shall not be entitled to the policies and benefits of the College, except where specifically stated in the Personnel Policy Manual.
6. Completion of the probationary period does not guarantee permanent employment with the College. Either party may terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without providing reasons for separation.
7. Upon completion of the probationary period, the employee will become a regular employee and will be entitled to the policies and benefits of the College, except where specifically excluded.
