Le Moyne College Antivirus Policy

All members of the Le Moyne College community using either a personally owned or College owned computer are required to have antivirus software installed on their machine. As the Office of Information Technology (IT) continues to detect the introduction and spread of computer virus strains into the campus computing community, this requirement is designed to prevent the spread of viruses on computers within the College community.

  1. Antivirus software should be updated on a regular basis (at least every other week) as new viruses are being introduced worldwide on a daily basis.
  2. For personally owned computers, the College has developed a web site to assist those individuals who do not yet have antivirus software installed on their computers. Please visit the following link and bookmark this page for future reference:
    http://www.lemoyne.edu/information_technology/virus.htm
This site details several free and commercial antivirus software packages recommended by Information Technology to adequately protect your computers from virus infections.
  3. If IT detects that a user has introduced a virus via their personal computer, IT will notify the user of the incident and provide information on how to acquire or update their anti-virus software and clean their system.
  4. Failure to comply will result in the temporary shutdown of the user's network and e-mail accounts until such time that proper virus protection has been obtained.
  5. IT may, at its discretion, temporarily stop all GroupWise e-mail to and from the Internet whenever a new virus is announced by one of our major anti-virus vendors until a method of defeating the virus has been developed by the vendor. This allows us to assess our systems for vulnerability and acquire/distribute new anti-virus definitions before resuming e-mail traffic flow. We will store all in/outbound e-mail and will automatically process it once the updated virus protection is in place.
