Beginning in 2007-08, the College recommends students consider purchasing a NexLink Versatility Laptop from Seneca Data. After extensive research and product testing, we have identified the Versatility as a high quality laptop that is fully compatible with our network. This competatively priced laptop is built with all Intel® components and includes a 3 year warranty, a certified local support desk that is authorized to do all warranty repairs, full McAfee antivirus/antispyware protection, Mircrosoft Office 2007, and a list of optional features to tailor your laptop to your individual requirements. In addition, your laptop will be configured and registered on our network for you ahead of time so that when you come on campus in August, just plug it in and away you go! To see a list of frequently asked questions regarding Le Moyne's new laptop program, or to purchase a NexLink Versatility laptop, click here.
Students always have the option of buying a computer from one of the other major computer vendors: Apple, Compaq, Dell and Gateway. These companies provide high quality machines to students at a reasonable price. Each of these companies offer special educational pricing to ensure that students are getting competitively priced computers that meet or exceed the campus minimum recommended configurations. To view the computers offered by these companies, please follow this link
Le Moyne provides a free high-speed ethernet connection for each student living in the residence halls and other campus housing. Students are required to register their computer with Information Technology via a simple web-based procedure. To access the wired network, your computer will need to have a network card. Almost all new computers come with this built in. If you need to add a network card to your computer, ask for a 10/100 Ethernet with an RJ-45 connection. You will also need an Ethernet cable. The college recommends a 25' long cable so that your desk can be located anywhere in your room. 25'cables are available at the College Bookstore.
In addition, Le moyne provides wireless internet access in all of the academic buildings and some of the public spaces in the residence halls. for a map showing Wireless internet coverage on campus, click here
In order to use the campus' wireless network, your laptop or handheld device will need a wireless ethernet card. Most newer laptops have these as a standard configuration (if you need to purchase a wireless card, be sure to get one that supports the following standards: 802.11b and 802.11g).
There are instructions on ECHO (you are required to log in to access them) on how to configure your wireless card to access the campus network. If you need help configuring your wireless card, you can bring your device to Information Technology for assistance.
Modems, such as those used at home, are not used to connect to our campus network.
Antivirus and Antispyware software
All machines should contain up-to-date Antivirus software (meaning the virus definitions should be no less than 2 weeks old). Students are responsible for keeping this software updated and the virus definition files current via either a manual or automatic process.
Students using PC's and living on campus are REQUIRED to use the following software (provided free by Le Moyne during the computer registration process) to keep their computers protected and up-to-date:
Information Technology reserves the right to remove students from the campus network for failure to have adequate antivirus protection OR if they are found to be spreading viruses to the campus community from their personal systems.
Students living off campus are strongly encouraged to have active antivirus and antispyware software as well. While the College's software license does not allow use of the Mcafee software off of the campus, Information Technology maintains links to several free software packages that will adequately protect your computer from malware. For information on obtaining Antivirus software, click here.
Other software
Le Moyne will provide (free of charge) access to a set of standard software used on campus for both Macintosh and Windows computers which is fully supported by the College. All of these titles will be available from the college's FTP server when students arrive on campus. They include:
Other software is supported by Le Moyne but NOT provided by the College. These include software such as: Microsoft Office Suite2007 (MS Word, Excel, & Powerpoint, and Access) for the PC and for Mac, Microsoft Office 2007 (MS Word, Excel, & Powerpoint). Other supported software includes packages such as Microsoft Publisher, Microsoft Frontpage, and Macromedia Dreamweaver
If you use any of the software listed above, you should expect to receive knowledgeable technical assistance from the Information Technology Help Desk.
Do not rely on floppy disks for storage. They can be unreliable and may fail over time resulting in loss of data. In addition, many computers on campus no longer have floppy drives in them! Information Technology recommends using the College's network storage space to store important academic documents. Each student is provided with 25MB of storage space on a network server that can be accessed from any computer on our network or from any computer connected to the internet. This server is backed up each day and is a very reliable place to store your documents and files. In addition, IT recommends the use of removable “flash” or “jump” drives that plug into a computer’s USB port. In order to be able to use USB drives on campus computers, the flash drives must NOT require software drivers to be installed.
Support for students' personal computers is limited to the connection to the campus network, assistance in removing malware and the software described above Any other technical support and service issues ( including hardware, Operating Systems, etc.) for students will need to be contracted independently by outside vendors!
In the event that students experience difficulty connecting to the campus network, or in the unlikely event that their computer becomes infected with a virus, or if they have general questions regarding any of the supported software above, they should contact the Technology Helpdesk. at 315-445-4579 or via E-mail at helpline@lemoyne.edu.
