Le Moyne
Q. Are laptop computers a required purchase for Le Moyne College students? A. No. Le Moyne College does not require students to purchase a computer. However, about 97% of our residential students do bring a computer to school with them. About 77% of these last year were laptops.
Q. Is there a benefit to purchasing the laptop recommended by Le Moyne College? A. As part of this program, Le Moyne College has teamed exclusively with Seneca Data to provide laptops at a significantly reduced price. The Nexlink 4300 model that the College has selected is built by Seneca Data, an established Central New York company. It has been tested extensively on our campus network. But, the most important benefit of purchasing through the Le Moyne program is that you will have a fully configured laptop that is already registered on our network when you come to campus! No waiting around – just plug it in! We also provide full McAfee antivirus/antispyware protection on these laptops and Microsoft Office 2007.
Q. Why is Le Moyne College recommending a Seneca Data laptop? A. Le Moyne College is recommending Seneca Data laptops because:
1. The laptops are built using only high quality Intel ® components.
2. These laptops are network certified and tested. The laptops can be attached to the network on campus to access campus-wide computing resources including the Internet. Seneca Data guarantees that the Nexlink 4300 will function properly on the network. That same guarantee cannot be made with systems purchased elsewhere.
3. Seneca Data will perform warranty repair on these laptops via a courier service from the College. Q. Do I have to buy my laptop through Le Moyne College?A. No. You may shop around but be sure the specifications match the College recommendations on our website. (See http://www.lemoyne.edu/information_technology/computers.htm) Q. Where do I get my Seneca Data laptop serviced?A. Warranty repair is by Seneca Data via courier service from Le Moyne to Seneca Data. Students will be given a loaner laptop, if available, to use if their Seneca Data laptop is taken out of service for repairs. Warranty service is provided by a factory-trained technician only for Seneca Data laptops. *The College cannot provide hardware repair for student laptops. Q. What happens if my laptop “crashes” and I am unable to access the computer?A. The NexLink computers all have PC-Angel recovery software pre-installed on them. This software gives students the capability to return the laptop back to the original factory configuration, with all of the Le Moyne software and configurations intact. Note: Restoring the computer with PC-Angel will result in loss of any data and files added to the machine after the initial use! Q. If I choose to pick up my computer at LeMoyne, when can I do this?A. NexLink computers that are not shipped to a home address can be picked up beginning on Saturday, August 23 at the Technology Support Center, located in the Falcone Library, between the hours of 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. Q. Can I order more than one NexLink Laptop? A. No, not at this time. Due to software licensing restrictions for McAfee and Microsoft, we are only able to offer one Nexlink computer per registered student at Le Moyne at this time. Q. Will I have an Internet connection in my room?A. There are 2 network jacks located in each residence hall room. When you connect your computer to the network, you will have high-speed Internet access. The campus is also equipped with a wireless network, which allows you internet and network access using a laptop and wireless card. Wireless access is available in all academic buildings and some residence halls. Q. Do I have to pay for Internet Access?A. There are no additional fees for Internet access. When you connect your machine to the network, Internet access is provided. Q. Do all students have a Le Moyne College e-mail account?A. All students are given a life-long e-mail account along with their network account. The network username is usually the first six letters of the last name, first initial, and middle initial. Q. How do I connect my machine to the campus network?A. Students will need to have a 10/100 Network Interface card or NIC in their computer. All new computers, including the NexLink 4300, come with these NICs. You will also need to bring a Cat 5 ehternet network cable (15’ or longer). These are available at the bookstore. Students with laptops who wish to use wireless will need a wireless card. Most new laptops including the NexLink 4300, purchased via Seneca Data, have a built-in wireless card so purchasing one is not necessary. Q. If I purchase a laptop through Seneca Data, will I be able to use it at home to connect to the Internet?A. Yes, the laptops have a built-in modem and network jack. These can be used to connect at home if you have a dial-up provider or a cable modem or wireless service.
