Using Filters
- Filters work by mapping the data from the database field by
field into the EndNote record. Databases with tested EndNote filter
files are indicated with this graphic .
- FirstSearch databases from OCLC
- EndNote must be installed on the computer you are using to
search FirstSearch.
- Using Internet Explorer (this may not work with the Netscape
browser)
Select your FirstSearch database and mark the records you want
to add to your EndNote database.
- Select Export from the FirstSearch menu and then the EXPORT
button on the bottom of the screen.
- You will be prompted for an EndNote file to open.
- The EndNote software will prompt you to select a Filter -
select the one that matches the file you were searching.
- In the case where you do not find a filter file for the file
you are searching.
- the filter file might need to be downloaded
from the EndNote website and stored in the EndNote\Filters
directory
- After the transfer is complete, open each new record in EndNote
and correct any problems with the data transfer. Common problems
include multiple author names in a single field, the wrong record
type applied, or data in the wrong field.
- Non-FirstSearch databases
- Do not automatically open EndNote and transfer the records.
- Setup may be more complex and require knowledge of fields
in the EndNote file as well as the originating database.
- If there is no filter, a new filter might need to be created-
see the EndNote
User Manual for instructions or contact the Electronic
Resources Librarian for assistance.
