Accessing Library Resources from Off-campus
There are two methods of getting access to the
library's subscription services (databases and full-text) from off-campus.
1.
|
Use AccessLMC - Information Technology's dial-up service
|
| |
AccessLMC is the PREFERRED method for using Library Resources
off-campus if you use have a computer that uses a MODEM for DIALUP
access to the Internet.
AccessLMC provides off-campus dial-up access to College services
like Simon, the Internet, GroupWise e-mail, and ftp access to
your home, department-shared or web page directories.
You will need to provide a valid Le
Moyne network username (do NOT use the .year extension) and password
(the same Novell username and password that you use on
campus). This is not necessarily the same password as you use
for email.
IT will provide technical support in setting up your home computer
to use this service. The home computer MUST have a browser AND
a functioning modem. They cannot provide support without those
available.
*AccessLMC has a two-hour connection limit.
This method is recommended for all dialup users because of
the simplified setup. Users with continuous connections to the
Internet such as those with Roadrunner will need to follow the
proxy instructions below.

2.
|
Library Proxy Service
|
| |
A specical piece of software called a Proxy
Server is installed on SIMON to allow users to connect to Library
databases as if they were on campus. This software requires users
to change settings in their browsers which allow the proxy server
to work. If you use the dial-up method above, this setup is not
necessary. |
Use this method only if you cannot use the method above,
e.g. you have no modem because you are on a network either at work
or are using Roadrunner at home.
You will need to provide a valid Le
Moyne Identification Card - You will be prompted to input your name
as shown on the card and the barcode in the lower left corner of the
card.
To have off-campus access, adjust the proxy server settings in
your web browser using the following instructions
[be very careful to follow all the instructions]
Proxy Server FAQ's
- Problems have been reported with Internet Explorer where
it does not work properly even though the configuration has been done
properly. Because of this and because Netscape is significantly simpler
to configure when using proxy, we recommend you download and use Netscape
if you have problems with Internet Explorer. It is available free
of charge from the Netscape Homesite. http://wp.netscape.com/download/archive.html
- select either Netscape Navigator 4.08 or Netscape Communicator 4.7x.
Do not select Netscape 6 or Netscape 7.
- Some companies prevent users from modifying the network settings
in their browsers or have firewalls that prevent the use of proxy
on their networks. Check with network services at your company
if you are experiencing problems.
- Netscape 6.0 does not work with proxy at this time. Using
this browser with the proxy configured and turned on will result in
the browser loosing the ability to follow ANY hyperlinks. Please use
one of the older versions until Netscape issues an updated version
which supports proxy properly.
- The proxy server will work with Netscape 3.0 through 4.73 (not
Netscape 6.0) or with Internet Explorer 3.02 and above.
- Only Netscape and Internet Explorer will work. Other browers
are not supported. e.g. AOL's browser does not work.
- While not necessary to understand the inner workings of the proxy
server to use it for off-campus for off-campus access, click here
for a description of HOW IT WORKS.

What are available for databases and full-text resources to
off-campus users?
|
| |
Most databases are licensed for use by the entire
Le Moyne College community both on-campus and off-campus but
some databases have restricted licenses which limit use either
physically on-campus or within the library. Restrictions are noted
on either the Subject
or Alphabetic List
of databases by the following symbols.
CD-ROM databases are limited
to use within the Library because special software or setup is
often necessary. Special arrangements may be made for on
campus users to gain access to some of these databases
depending on the technical configuration of their computers and
the database needed. Off campus access is not currently technically
possible. Please contact the Electronic
Resources Librarian , x4332, if you have need of this service.
