    Objectives for Mathematics

A student graduating with a major in mathematics will:

    1. Have a well-rounded introduction to the main branches of modern mathematics that keeps an appropriate balance between theoretical and applied mathematics.
    2. Have the training and knowledge necessary to appreciate and apply modern mathematics and to find rewarding careers in mathematics related fields, or to pursue further education.
    3. Have an understanding of the tools required to be able to quantitatively analyze and understand the natural and social world.
    4. Have the ability to solve problems, think analytically, and reason quantitatively.
    5. Have the ability to access and communicate mathematical information.
    6. Have an appreciation of the concept of formal mathematical proof and the ability to write simple proofs.
    7. Participate actively in mathematics related events.

As a result of these seven objectives, students will be qualified to:

    • Undertake advanced studies in the mathematical sciences.
    • Become qualified teachers of mathematics.
    • Pursue careers in any of the numerous areas where mathematics is applied or quantitative reasoning is needed.

To support the objectives, the curriculum is composed of a variety of concentrations. These permit the student to emphasize those areas of mathematics which are most closely related to one's career goals while maintaining the traditions of pure mathematics. In addition, an important function of the department is to work in close cooperation with the other departments and programs of the College in developing the necessary tools required by students in these other disciplines.
