(Dolphins in Volunteer Efforts)

D.I.V.E. (Dolphins in Volunteer Efforts): Approximately 300 first-year students participated in our D.I.V.E. service day, Sunday, Aug. 24. Their service included cleaning, landscaping, painting, serving ice cream and candle making at 19 agencies in the Syracuse area. The students were accompanied by members of the Orientation Committee and several faculty and administrators. I am extremely grateful to all of these students; the agencies who provided us the opportunity to serve them and introduced our new students to our community; Dr. Fred Pestello, our president, who encouraged us all to serve; the D.I.V.E. planning committee (John Haley, Barbara Karper and Susan Ames) who worked many hours to plan this event; our photographers; and all of the people in the Office of Student Development without whose help, this event could never have been as successful! Fr. Don Maldari, S.J. has created a picture gallery of this event. They can be seen at the Web site listed below. -- Sr. Joan Kerley, FMSJ

Students Volunteer at Hillbrook

On Aug. 10, 2008, the Syracuse Post Standard sent a representative, Sue Carroll Linhorst, who reported on the great volunteer work that students (who included: Amber Roy, sophomore; Cayla Carapella, junior; Tania Aouad, Le Moyne alumna; Kimaya Grace, SUNY Albany junior; and Khang Le, senior; and faculty member Anthony J. Nocella, II of the criminology department at Le Moyne College) organize at Hillbrook Youth Detention Facility every Sunday afternoon. The work consists of group building, team work, leadership, and empowerment workshops with three to four units at Hillbrook each week. The volunteer idea came out of a 221 Criminology course that Nocella taught. Most of the students, even after the class had finished, kept coming together on Sundays and, in the case of Carapella, she brought some of her friends from her neighborhood. Some of the activities at Hillbrook include working with beach balls, the human knot, in which participants have to figure out how to untangle themselves from a knot made with their arms. At the end of every Sunday workshop, donuts, donated by Dunkin' Donuts, are given out to all of the residents. On Thursday, August 21, 2008, The Post Standard’s edition of Neighbors: City of Syracuse, published a front page article on Professor Nocella’s volunteer group at Hillbrook called “Fun Breaks Boundaries: Lessons in Sociable Therapy.” Activities conducted with the residents, along with quotes from the volunteers, as well as general procedures were documented in the article. If you would like to get real live experience that will help you with your career in the future and will like to get involved, please feel free to contact: Anthony J. Nocella, II (nocellaj@lemoyne.edu) or any of the students involved. For those who have Facebook, please search and join the group “Outdoor Empowerment” to view more information on this volunteer group as well as to see the article.

Maldari, S.J., Presents at Convention

Donald Maldari, S.J., associate professor in the religious studies department, presented a paper, “Christian Ministry without the Distinction of Clergy and Laity,” at the annual convention of the College Theology Society at Salve Regina University.

Bendik-Keymer Presents at International Conference

From Sept. 5 -7 at Clemson University, Jeremy Bendik-Keymer, new assistant professor of philosophy, will facilitate and present at the international conference he co-organized, Human Flourishing and Restoration in the Age of Global Warming. According to the 2009 issue of “America’s Best Colleges” guidebook, Le Moyne College placed #19 for “Best College” in the North Universities-Master’s category. The College was rated on its academic reputation, retention, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources and alumni giving. Dr. Dennis DePerro, vice president for enrollment management, said there are many reasons for Le Moyne’s consistent success in the rankings. “As a College, we make a concerted effort year after year to improve many aspects of a Le Moyne education. Our quality academic programs, impressive faculty, and upgraded facilities, as well as our ability to keep our costs affordable, all factor into what makes us so successful. And there is a need, more than ever, for a values-based education that provides Le Moyne students with the solid grounding that will serve them well for the rest of their lives in their personal and professional endeavors.” For more details on the rankings, visit the Web site listed below.

New Athletic Center Hours of Operation

The department of athletics and the Recreation Center are pleased to announce new hours of operation for the 2008-09 academic year. Bybee, director of the Institute for the Study of the Judiciary, Politics and the Media, Syracuse University Margaret Susan Thompson, associate professor of history, Syracuse University When voters elect the next president of the United States, they will be selecting the person likely to nominate the next several justices to the Supreme Court, since five of the current justices are at least 70 years old. The Supreme Court has had a profound impact on the lives of most of today's voters, deciding cases on monumental issues from desegregation and voter rights to the death penalty and eminent domain. What does history tell us about presidents and their Supreme Court appointments? Wayne Grove, associate professor of economics, Le Moyne College Danny Hayes, assistant professor of political science, Syracuse University High energy and food prices, stagnant wages and job losses, mortgage foreclosures, troubled stock markets -- all are certainly hot button issues in this year's election. If it's true that Americans vote according to their pocketbooks ("It's the economy, stupid!"), then voters should be closely studying the economic policy plans of the candidates. But how much influence will the president actually have in changing the course of the economy and creating confidence and stability in the marketplace? What role is the economy playing in the campaign, and how should voters evaluate the candidates' platforms and promises?

New York Times Reporter Eric Lichtblau

Tuesday, Oct. 21, 7:30 p.m. James Commons, Curtin Special Events Room How Much Does the Public Really Need to Know? The exhibit, titled “The Unique Watercolor Style of Stephen Ryan,” opens on Monday, September 15, and will run through Friday, October 10, and can be seen during regular library hours (Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to midnight; Saturday and Sunday from noon to 8 p.m.). Le Moyne College will host an opening reception on Friday, September 19, from 6 – 8 p.m. in the gallery. The event is free and open to the public. Ryan states that he has always been fascinated with the challenge of impressionistic watercolors. “You don’t get any second chances with watercolors,” he says. “The paints take you where they want to go. It’s a constant struggling collaboration until we reach the final image.” Ryan has won many awards for his watercolors and runs his own graphic design studio in Skaneateles, N.Y. He is also an adjunct professor of art at Onondaga Community College.
